Welcome to Symondsbury Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School. We hope that this prospectus will answer any questions you may have about us and the way we work.

We are a very caring school. We seek to retain and develop the values of family friendship and promote a sympathetic, tolerant and considerate approach to relationships throughout our community. With space for only 105 pupils, our children all know each other well and as they grow they are gradually encouraged to take on responsibility for each other and for the school.

On entering our school, your child will be entering a world where learning is at the heart of everything. We treat everybody as an individual and try to create a wide variety of opportunities so that every aptitude is valued and has the means of expression. We have a talented and creative staff who all work together as a team to ensure that the children in our care receive the best and broadest education possible, achieving high standards whatever their particular strengths and weaknesses.

We promote traditional Christian values and discipline, with Religious Education and worship central to the life of the school. We are fortunate in the strong support we receive from parents, the church and the wider community and this enables us to provide an exceptionally wide range of extra-curricular opportunities for your children.

We are part of the Bridport Cluster of Small Schools as well as the larger Bridport Pyramid of schools.

We hope that you and your children will share the strong sense of pride we all feel about our school and look forward to welcoming you into our community.

Yours sincerely

The Headteacher

THE AIMS OF THE SCHOOL

We aim, within our Christian community, to:

  • Create a happy, safe environment where all children feel valued and where their achievements are celebrated.

  • Help each child acquire, through a carefully planned and challenging curriculum, the skills necessary to develop full potential in all areas of learning. We believe high standards of Literacy and Numeracy are very important.
  • Encourage each child to be a respectful and caring citizen.
  • Encourage all children to be confident, positive and independent in their attitude to learning and life.

TRANSPORT

Transport is provided for all children of compulsory school age who live beyond the distances laid down by the Education Committee but within the catchment area. Details of the route and pickup points are available from the school.

Details of distance limits are available from the transport office at County Hall, Dorchester, telephone 01305 251000. Concessionary seats may be available by application to the above office, which will also give details of charges and conditions. The school has no say in the transport arrangements or a child’s entitlement to a seat. We should be notified of any problems with timing and quantity of provision so that we can lobby on your behalf.

We are concerned that the children reach school safely and stress that it is important that all children behave sensibly on the buses.

SCHOOL DRESS

In order to present a consistent image and avoid discrimination there is a recommended range of school dress, which is easily obtained locally.

CLOTHING

Children should wear a white polo shirt and a Symondsbury blue sweatshirt, cardigan or jumper, with black or grey trousers, shorts or skirts. Girls may wear blue and white dresses in the summer. Children are required to wear hats in hot weather.

FOOTWEAR

Children should wear brown or black sensible shoes in the winter with the option of sandals in the summer. Football boots should be worn for football only and black plimsolls for all other sports and PE, except outside games where trainers are recommended. Shin pads are required for football.

JEWELLERY

We see no reason at all for children to wear jewellery of any type to school. Children who have pierced ears should only wear small studs, which must be removed or covered on PE days.

Once children have learned to tell the time they may wear a small sensible watch to school, which they must remove for PE. As with all personal possessions, this remains their own responsibility.

The school is able to offer assistance towards clothing only in extreme circumstances.

SPORTS, SWIMMING AND CRAFT KIT

Games and PE uniform is a plain white tee shirt and dark blue or black shorts only. Only short socks should be worn and not tights.

When representing the school at sporting events, those who take part will be given the school strip to wear. As soon as the event is over the strip should be washed, ironed and returned to school as soon as possible.

All sports and games equipment should go home at half terms and holidays to be washed. All items of clothing must be permanently named and be the responsibility of the child.

Children swim and learn sports skills at the Leisure Centre. They will need a named swimming costume, towel and swimming bag.

They also need an overall for painting and craftwork. An old adult shirt is suitable.

NAME TAGS: All items of clothing and kit should be clearly named. Biro on labels is not enough!
