I hope you enjoy this introduction to our school.

Brakenhale is a small, friendly secondary school, where class sizes are small and support for each student is personalised. We are committed to achieving high standards for all of our students and believe that every child in our school matters.

Please visit Brakenhale during the school day and see for yourself how important learning and achievement are in the life of our school.

Brakenhale is a School Community in which:

  • Success is celebrated
  • Membership of the Community is important
  • Improvement is continuous
  • Learning is central - Learn ~ Achieve ~ Succeed
  • Everyone is valued

I look forward to meeting you here at Brakenhale.

Mr P M Salter

Student Council/Cadre

Brakenhale has an active Student Council/Cadre. We seek to involve students in their own learning.  As part of this process we are keen to hear the students' views on all aspects of their school life and to offer them the opportunity to develop as citizens.  The School Council is an all-inclusive organisation which provides such an opportunity and is designed to give every student at the school a voice.  All students are represented on this Council by elected members and the staff and governors are also present at meetings.  There are 4 representatives from each year group and meetings are held on alternate Thursdays.

The school is heard through the Council/Cadre.  Opinions about school policies and potential teachers who come for interview are listened to and are given consideration.  The Council/Cadre also organises charity events to help raise money for the school and other organisations.

There are a comprehensive and varied choice of activities and clubs on offer to all students.

Healthy Schools Award Bronze
Awarded in January 2004
We have achieved this award for work undertaken towards becoming a Health Promoting school.
We have achieved success in developing a whole school approach to health and education in our work towards the National Healthy Schools Standard.
Investor In People award logo Investors in People
Awarded in September 2004
Educators are natural 'Investors in People', they are committed to learning and their priority is the welfare and development of their students.  Recognition as investors in people helps to improve performance through compatible values: the importance of learning and professional development, continuous improvement and the benefits of evaluation.
The standard also addresses the whole of the school community, recognising that learning and development are not only at the heart of students' experiences but also critical for everyone who contributes to the success of the school.
Investor In People award logo Sportsmark
Awarded for 2003-2006
Sportsmark is Sport England's highly successful accreditation scheme for secondary schools.  It is a developmental and auditing tool that rewards and recognises a school for its out-of-hours sports provision and a broad and balance PE curriculum.
Schools Sports CoOrdinator School Sports Coordinator Programme
Started in September 2004
The School Sport Coordinator Programme is a multi-agency initiative launched as part of the Government's 'A Sporting Future for All' strategy, aiming to create sport coordinators to work in partnership with schools.  They will help to increase sport opportunities for young people through coordinated quality physical education and out-of-hours learning activities, whilst developing strong links with local community sports facilities and other developmental programmes.
Miss E Kane is the Partnership Development Manager for the Bracknell Forest School Sport Programme and is based at The Brakenhale School.

Student Reception

At The Brakenhale School we encourage students to arrive prepared for the school day, but if they do forget their timetables, PE kit, etc. at Student Reception we can help sort the problem out.  Student Reception is open from 8.15am to 4.00pm.

Students should go to Student Reception if they are feeling ill or are injured, to sign in late after 8.45am, to look for or hand in lost property, to wait for their parents and if leaving school to sign out.

If a student is going to be absent from school, parents/guardians should report it to the school on the first day of absence by contacting Mrs Dean by telephone on 01344 465050 or via email

If a student has a dental or doctor's appointment or other reason to leave the school during the day, they will need to bring a letter from their parents giving the details.

For Term Time Holidays, a request form must be completed and returned to Student Reception.

To download the form please select: Student Holiday Request Form
