Mrs C Skewes - HeadteacherWelcome to The Cornelius Vermuyden School and Arts College Website and thank you for your interest in our school. I hope that this website provides a useful insight into the way we work.

I am delighted to have the opportunity of introducing you to The Cornelius Vermuyden School. I hope that if you have not already visited the school then you will take the opportunity to do so. In this website we have tried to give you an idea of what we value in our school and what we are proud of.

At The Cornelius Vermuyden School we aim to be a caring and orderly community, where individuals are able to learn, contribute and develop. In order to achieve these aims we seek to provide a disciplined and purposeful environment, where the traditional values of mutual care, consideration and acceptance flourish.

As a learning community we seek to provide an education that is exciting, challenging and prepares each child for life and learning beyond school; a broad based education in which achievement is celebrated and children succeed. We provide an education that stretches pupils of all abilities and values each child as an individual in their own right. We believe that The Cornelius Vermuyden School is a school to which parents may entrust their children safe in the knowledge that they are being cared for by an able and conscientious staff - a staff committed to achieving the very best for those given to their care.

Mrs Skewes begins the building of the Karslake Centre

As a school we pride ourselves on our close links with our community and constantly seek to improve and develop what we offer to our students and the community. We are a specialist college for Arts and successfully offer a wide range of subjects and course choices for our students. Over the past year we have completed the building of a new Arts Centre which provides excellent facilities for our students and our community.

Mrs Skewes opens the new Karslake Centre

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and staff. We are pleased that the school has been recognised as an Investor in People, as this is a public acknowledgement of our commitment to the care and development of all the people at our school, staff and students alike. We were particularly proud to receive the prestigious Artsmark, awarded for excellence, in recognition of the high standards in the arts we offer to our students and members of the local community.

Yours sincerely

The School's Vision

Quotes

The school's vision is well adjusted to the needs of students and their community.

Quotes

The Cornelius Vermuyden School and Arts College seeks to provide a quality education within a supportive, caring and disciplined environment to pupils of all abilities and to work with and for the local community. The education we offer recognises every person as an individual in his or her own right and aims to develop each child’s intellectual, cultural, emotional, spiritual, social and physical capacities to the full. This education celebrates the achievements of each individual and strives for excellence in the development and performance of every child in order that each is able to contribute positively to society at large.

As an Arts College we will raise standards in the Visual Arts for all our students across the ability range, leading to whole school improvement in performance. We will:

  • Our excellent ICT facilitiesbe active partners in a learning society with our local family of schools and our local community, sharing resources and expertise, developing and promoting good practice;

  • promote an arts educational culture, which is creative, expressive, technological and vocational;

  • make extensive use of ICT, exploiting new technologies in developing new approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum;

  • raise the post-16 participation rate in the Visual Arts and provide young people with the skills needed to progress into further training, higher education and employment according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions;

  • develop and disseminate good practice to share with other schools, across Canvey Island, country-wide and beyond;

  • work closely with our local community: in the arts and among those we can reach through the arts, enriching, stimulating and enabling.

Pupils during Arts Week - June 2004

We believe that placing the Visual Arts at the centre of our school life will be transformational: for the arts in school, for our whole curriculum, for our relationship with local community, for the local arts community, for many individuals and groups who will be reached through arts activities.

We are convinced that being a successful Arts College will enhance all other areas of school life. We continue to commit ourselves to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of the curriculum.

Quotes

The whole school is sharply focused on raising achievement. The good teamwork of the Senior Leadership Team, especially on improving teaching and learning, is leading to the spreading of good practice.

Quotes

Students follow an appropriate curriculum in both key stages, though it is particularly imaginative in Key Stage 4. In Years 10 and 11, students have a good a well-developed range of GCSE and vocational courses.

Case Study 1:
Developing and Running an Applied Art and Design Course

In early February 2003 my school, a small foundation school with nine hundred pupils, received Visual Arts status. One of the most significant changes to the Art curriculum was the introduction of an Applied Art and Design Course.

The following case study explains how this school set about establishing its Applied Art and Design Course. It will look at pupil recruitment, the course outline, curriculum time, timetable implications, schemes of work and interim assessment.

Pupils' Work from the Applied Art and Design Course

The first stumbling block was pupil recruitment. Being a school that had previously only offered GCSE Art and Design, 3-Design and Photography we had to find pupils who were interested in the course, capable of fulfilling the course’s requirements and benefited from the course, both academically and eventually professionally.
