About the School

The John Bramston School is one of two successful secondary schools serving the community of Witham. It has a fully comprehensive 11 – 18 years intake with a diverse range of students from all socio-economic backgrounds.

The John Bramston School does not have a catchment area as such. For a number of years now parents have had a free choice of school for their children. Obviously any school takes students from its immediate vicinity, which in our case is the south-western half of Witham. However we also take students from all parts of the town, plus a number of surrounding villages including, Hatfield Peveral, Terling, Rivenhall, Silver End and Faulkbourne.

ETHOS

We are providing a service to the students and their parents as well as to the wider community in Witham and beyond. That service must be the highest quality of which we are capable. The John Bramston School is COMMITTED TO QUALITY and this requires us to respond to the needs of our customers, treating each other as internal customers and constantly striving to improve the service that we offer. Our central purpose is to provide an academic environment in which all students have both the opportunity and the encouragement to develop their full potential.

The John Bramston School is committed to:

  • excellence in academic study;
  • offering a range of opportunities for children of all abilities to demonstrate success;
  • care and concern for all students as individuals.

This commitment can be summarised by the mnemonic ARC

Academic excellence
Range of opportunities
Care and concern for individuals

Aims

1. To provide all students with the opportunity and encouragement to develop their full potential.

2. To provide an environment where love of learning can flourish, so that students and staff are encouraged to view learning as a continuing and lifelong process.

3. To prepare students to play a full and constructive role in a democratic and pluralist society; in the worlds of work, leisure and family life.

Objectives

1. To provide a well structured curriculum with appropriate mechanisms to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve the best of which he or she is capable in academic terms.

2. To provide a range of academic and leisure opportunities for students to achieve success.

3. To provide a pastoral structure in which all students are viewed as individuals and are provided with the support and guidance needed to assist them to achieve their full potential.

4. To provide a framework for spiritual development, and for the encouragement of moral and social values which will enable students to respect the views and rights of others, to know right from wrong and stand up for what is right.

5. To maintain a friendly, purposeful and caring atmosphere where all can feel secure and equally valued as members of the school community.

6. To provide a working environment which is well resourced in staffing, books and equipment, and where the premises are clean, tidy and well cared for.

7. To maintain good relations with the local community, including parents, local industry, feeder junior schools, and other local organisations and services, and to provide opportunities for students to make a contribution to the local community.

8. To provide a structure for consultative management and sound administration so that all members of the school community are able to make a full contribution.

9. To ensure that there is a continuous programme of staff development and training for all members of staff, linked to a supportive appraisal system.

10. To be able to adapt and respond to the changing needs of the students, staff, parents and the wider community.

11. To ensure that the aims are known and understood by all members of the school community and that all staff actively work towards the achievement of the objectives.

Values

We are aware of the needs of our students to develop morally and spiritually as well as academically and socially.

Religious Education is taught by specialist teachers throughout the school. The importance attached to Christianity in our society is reflected whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of other principal religions represented in Great Britain.

We have a strong system of pastoral care, which ensures that every child is known and treated as an individual. College students provide help and encouragement for the younger children by means of a mentoring system.

CURRICULUM

Aims and Objectives of the Curriculum

"In Essex, every learner is entitled to a curriculum rich and varied, challenging and inspiring, which enables each individual to fulfil her or his potential to the highest possible standard, so that all, for the benefit of all, are able to shape their destinies and create a better world."

In response to this vision, the Governors of The John Bramston School have established aims and objectives for the curriculum.

The starting point is the key school aim:

"TO PROVIDE ALL STUDENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO DEVELOP THEIR FULL POTENTIAL."

The fourteen objectives then follow:

1. To establish a balanced and broadly based curriculum for all students, in accord with all National Curriculum and other statutory requirements.

2. To establish a curriculum organisation which allows flexibility, progress, and continuity for each individual student.

3. To develop a policy of equal opportunity, ensuring that the curriculum is equally available to all, irrespective of ability, sex and ethnic and cultural background.

4. To involve parents at all stages in the learning process, and work towards maximising support for the individual student, at home as well as at school.

5. To strengthen the provision of learning support throughout the school and to ensure that all students who have identified special educational needs have them properly met.

6. To establish a comprehensive system of recording and evaluating students' progress and achievements.

7. To establish a pattern of individual student interviews for curriculum negotiation and progress review, mainly through tutorial work and the year system.

8. To consolidate and strengthen the provision of a sound and structured programme of Personal and Social Education throughout the school.

9. To encourage and develop habits of independent study and self-motivation, including a positive regular homework policy.

10. To consolidate and extend liaison with feeder junior schools.

11. To consolidate and extend curricular experience which involves the community and the outside world.

12. To consolidate, and develop further, extra-curricular activities, and to encourage all students to take part.

13. To encourage and require all members of the school to be courteous to each other, to foster social skills, sensitivity, and self-discipline.

14. To encourage effort and commitment by praise and reward.

In addition to the above, the school has priority claim during the school day to the Bramston Sports Centre. Students have year-round access to heated indoor swimming pools, sports hall, gymnasium, squash courts, and other specialist facilities. These, together with extensive outdoor playing fields and an all-weather pitch, provide excellent sports facilities.

The Sixth Form Centre provides education for post-16 students in Witham and surrounding areas, and is attractively laid out on the John Bramston site. The specialist accommodation includes:

The Sixth Form Centre offers a most attractive post-16 environment, combining the identity and adult atmosphere of a college with the support and familiarity of school. The Centre publishes its own separate brochure, which is available on request from the school.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

At John Bramston we encourage all students to extend their expertise in interests that they already have and also to explore new interests and skills. Each week throughout the term clubs and activities are run at lunch time and after school, and during the year study visits are organised, not only locally, but nationally and abroad.

The types of study visits, activities and clubs that your daughter or son could join are very varied and tailored each year to the needs and interests of our students.

The school has full use of the superb Bramston Sports Centre during the day and this provides the opportunity for students to take part in a large number of different sporting activities. There is the opportunity to represent the school in athletics, basketball, hockey, soccer, netball and volleyball. The teams are successful and there is intense competition for places. In addition to this there are general sporting opportunities such as badminton, dance, squash, swimming, trampolining and weight-training which are offered to all students in a wide range of clubs. The school also has swimming galas and sports days for each year group in the school.

Creative activities include a school orchestra and chamber orchestra, choirs, design and technology and drama, and other clubs and activities offered include computing, chess, games and quizzes, public speaking, discos and the school library.

Additionally, the school has a wide programme of study visits not only on a local basis - including trips to public libraries, churches and the zoo - but also nationally through field trips for subjects such as geography and biology. The school also organises visits abroad, including language exchange visits.

We have excellent school productions, where the music and drama departments join forces to give students the opportunity to take part in concerts, musicals and plays.

We have many contacts with local business and industry, whereby we are able to run events and competitions to introduce students to the many opportunities offered by local employers and by local clubs such as the Witham Rotary Club.
