The Priory School

The Priory School is a 11-18 comprehensive school located in the London Borough of Bromley. We are a very special and unique school in terms of what we offer to our students and the local community. This is due to being a Specialist Sports College, the only Full Service Extended School in Bromley and also part of a Federation with three other schools within the borough.

The Priory School in May 2006 was inspected by OfSTED and hey reported that we had good teaching and even outstanding teaching in parts of the school. We have also been able to enhance our students' learning experience by our new IT/ technology resources which are available in all classrooms. These include interactive whiteboards and the latest software packages to further develop the delivery of all lessons.

The Priory School also prides itself on the great opportunities we offer our students outside the normal curriculum. We are unique in having our own Outdoor Education Centre in South Wales, where all students have the opportunity of experiencing different activities such as rock climbing and raft making, as well as taking part in team building and leadership courses. As we are a Sports College, we pride ourselves on the quantity and quality of after school activities we are able to offer in a wide variety of sporting areas. The Priory School also provides a great amount of support in all other curriculum areas as part of an enrichment programme to ensure all students are able to excel in their preferred area of interest

At The Priory School, we believe that every child learns differently, in a different way and at different pace. For this reason we feel it is vitally important that the systems we have in place at our school enhance and develop our young people and do not hold them back.

To ensure this, we have developed
Learning Pathways.

Pathway 1 - 5 GCSE's at A* - G grade
Pathway 2 - 5 GCSE's at C or above grade
Pathway 3 - 5 GCSE's at A* - C grade
Pathway 4 - 5 GCSE's at A* - B grade
Pathway 5 - 5 GCSE's at A*/A grade

There are 5 of these which students are placed in from year 7.
Students are placed into these pathways based on 3 criteria.

i) CATS scores
ii) KS2 SATS scores
iii) Information from the students' Primary School teachers.

Once a student is placed in a pathway, they will begin to follow a unique route through the school. An example of this, is in Year 7, all Pathway 1 Students will have a primary school style focus for core subjects of Maths and English to place more emphasis on improving numeracy and literacy. In year 10, these students will have the opportunity to go to college and study for qualifications appropriate for them to develop a career in carpentry, plumbing or building.

The Priory School was the first school in Bromley to be awarded Full Service Extended School Status in January 2005.It has been seen as a model of best practice at both local and national level due to the developing partnerships within the local community and multi agency groups.

The Priory School recognises that to raise attainment, standards and aspirations, the trust and support of the local community needs to be gained. The Priory School promotes out of hours learning for all of its students in Sport, Dance, Art, Music, Technology, Science and English.

As well as providing clubs for our students, the school also provides Adult Education classes, Family Learning classes, youth clubs and support groups for the local community in the evenings and over the holiday periods.

A school is not able to do this alone and for this reason The Priory School is working with many different agencies to support the vast array of needs within the local area. These agencies work in multi- agency groups within the school and the adjacent Reachout Centre. This centre was leased to the school by Broomleigh Housing Association and renovated by the Metropolitan Police as part of the Safer Neighbourhood initiative. The intention is that these support mechanisms will provide essential advice and guidance for families enabling their children to enjoy their childhood and thrive in school.

This is beginning to happen within the school and local community in terms of behaviour, attendance and truancy. The recent OfSTED inspection stated that the vast majority of students enjoy coming to school.

Local community partnerships
The Priory School is continually striving to improve the extended services available and is now working in a closer partnership with Blenheim Children's Centre to create learning packages for the local community throughout the day and evening.

The Priory School Sixth form is a thriving and dynamic organisation which is growing in size every year. We offer a wide range of courses for all abilities which include the traditional academic as well as a variety of new, popular subjects and a wide range of vocational courses.

We are extremely fortunate to have a purpose built two-storey building complete with multi IT rooms, Learning resource Centre and Common Room.

While the principle aim is for each student to fulfil their academic/ vocational potential, we also strongly believe that a sixth form education should offer opportunities for the individual to develop their social skills. To this end, every sixth form student is automatically a member of the sixth form committee, which is the principle student body through which all events whether charity, social or sporting are debated, organised and run.

As each student progresses through their course of study, they are regularly assessed and closely monitored by a dedicated team of sixth form tutors and teaching staff to ensure they are attaining their target grades. Profiles are issued on a termly basis for students and their parents. The Priory School operates an open door policy in the sixth form, so any students with concerns can book an appointment to meet with their tutor or Head of Sixth Form whenever necessary. This also applies to parents.

We believe the most successful post 16 education occurs when an open and honest 3 way dialogue between the student, their parent/ carer and the school takes place. We are confident that our students' experience in our sixth form will have been worthwhile, enlightening, enjoyable and, ultimately, successful.
