ABOUT US

The Woodroffe School was the brain-child of Alban J. Woodroffe, MBE, JP, a prominent local landowner and educationalist who, in 1932 supervised the construction of the original building on our magnificent hillside site overlooking the harbour town of Lyme Regis.

For the first thirty years the school was a small mixed Grammar School drawing students from a wide rural and coastal area of West Dorset and East Devon. In 1950 a decision was taken to add boarding houses to the school with strong links being formed with Armed Services parents and those working overseas.

In 1962 the Grammar School was re-organised into an 11 - 18 mixed Comprehensive School serving two-hundred square miles or so around Lyme Regis. The school continued to take boarders, who were accommodated on three separate sites and in September 1991 became Grant Maintained. Today there are 950 students on roll (Sixth Form 150) but sadly boarding has been phased out in line with the national decline in demand for places. We assumed Foundation status in September 1999. In June 2003 the school was delighted to have been successful in its bid for specialist school status as an Arts College.

CURRICULUM

In Years 7 and 11 the school aims to provide a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum embracing the requirements of the National Curriculum.

In Years 7 and 8 students follow courses in English, Drama, Mathematics, Science, French, Technology, Geography, History, Religious Education, Physical Education, Art and Design, Music and Information Skills. In Year 9 Careers is added. Able linguists also study German in Years 8 and 9 instead of one period of PE.

In Key Stage 4 a broad core is maintained, all students studying English, Mathematics, Science, French, History or Geography, Physical Education, RE, ICT, Careers and Personal and Social Education. Most study a Technology subject but some are disapplied in this area to follow a Music course. An Open Option allows students to opt for an additional language, Art and Design, GCSE PE, Drama or Business Studies.

SIXTH FORM

The Sixth Form aims to provide a framework of diverse opportunities enabling individuals to achieve success in academic, personal and social development. It is an important feature of Woodroffe and fully reflects the comprehensive nature of the school.

The Sixth Form curriculum is broad and flexible and allows students to develop programmes of study suited to their individual needs. Courses offered include GCSEs in English, Mathematics and Science; AVCE Intermediate in Health and Social Care and Leisure and Tourism; AVCE Advanced in Art and Design, Leisure and Recreation; A levels in Art and Design, Business Studies, Design Technology, French, German, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, English, Geography, History, Music, Media Studies, Environmental Science and Theatre Studies. The new pattern of study for AS and A level (A2) was introduced in September 2000.

A Tutor led programme of Personal and Social Education is organised in Year 7 to 11 for all students. In the Sixth Form there is a "Core" and General Studies Programme.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

Extra curricular activities are extensive. Sporting and musical elements are strong, drama productions take place on a regular basis and there is an annual Art and Design Exhibition, Dance Show, Fashion Show and Cabaret. The school has a Combined Cadet Force (Army and Air Force), a Sailing Club and we operate the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and enter teams for the Ten Tors Expedition on Dartmoor. Notable recent events include a school production of “Grease”, collaboration with the National Youth Music Theatre Outreach in a premier production of the musical play “Torchbearers”, CCF camps in Cornwall and Germany, a ski trip to Austria, and art trips to Barcelona and New York. There are exchange links with secondary schools in Germany and Slovakia. Parental support for and participation in these activities is encouraged.

COMMUNITY LINKS

Community links are fostered through a number of activities. Students regularly participate in Rotary Youth Speaks. Sixth Formers undertake community service in a range of schools and residential homes, CCF Cadets support the town Remembrance Day Parade and musical groups are involved in concerts and other events. Members of the community are encouraged to come to school to contribute to Collective Worship and a range of curricular activities.

Woodroffe School is an orderly community emphasizing traditional values. In May 2000 OFSTED Inspectors reported that Woodroffe is “an effective school, proving high quality education. It achieves high standards academically and in many fields of endeavour. The school fosters very good interpersonal relationships and is a cohesive and mutually supportive society. Standards of behaviour are very good and students show the highest level of enthusiasm for every thing the school offers”.
