WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE!

As the first Integrated Community Primary school in East Renfrewshire, we are proud of how well we work in partnership with parents, our community and with other agencies to provide the very best opportunities for all of our children.

As you will see from our school aims, your child will be encouraged to develop positive relationships and above all work hard to achieve their potential.

Thornliebank Primary is a Health Promoting School. The focus throughout the school and nursery combines Health education with the development of physical activity and healthy choices in exercise and lifestyle.

We are very proud of our school and the standard of education we provide. Our staff are dedicated and committed to providing the best for our pupils.

If you would like to come and see around the school or nursery, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a visit.

Please read on and find out more about our school and nursery class!

ETHOS

OUR SCHOOL AIMS

To develop our partnership with parents, the community and other agencies, so that we may work together to provide every child with the high expectations, the foundation skills, and the appropriate attitudes that will enable them:

  • To achieve academically

  • To develop as conscientious, independent learners

  • To become socially and emotionally mature

  • To develop healthy lifestyles

  • To become responsible and active citizens

OUR SCHOOL CREED

This is our school

Let peace live here

Let the rooms be full of happiness,

Let love be all around,

Love of one another,

Love of all the people,

And love of life and living.

Let us remember

That, as many hands build a house,

So many hearts build a school.

OUR FIVE CORE VALUES

  • Compassion

  • Honesty

  • Fairness

  • Responsibility

  • Respect

CURRICULUM

We follow the 5-14 Guidelines produced by the Scottish Executive. To ensure balance in the curriculum the time allocations are as follows:

  • Language Arts 15%
  • Mathematics 15%
  • Expressive Arts 15%
  • Environmental Studies 25%
  • Religious/Moral Education 10%
  • Flexibility 20%

The flexibility factor is spread across the curricular areas dependant on the stage and identified needs.

CLOTHING AND UNIFORM

Given that there is substantial parental and public approval of uniform, schools in East Renfrewshire are free to encourage the wearing of school uniform.

Our colours at Thornliebank Primary and Nursery Class are gold and black. Pupils are requested to wear black skirt or trousers, and a white shirt with the school tie or a gold polo shirt with matching black sweatshirt.

Opportunities to order items from the list below are sent out to parents frequently throughout the session.

  • Sweatshirt - £7.50
  • Polo Shirt - £6.00
  • Fleece Jacket - £16.00
  • Rain Jacket - £15.00
  • Reversible Jacket - £15
  • Hat - £3.50

The school does not stock school ties. Details of where these can be purchased are available from the school office.

We would be grateful if all items of clothing were clearly labelled with the child's name.

Pupils are also requested for their own safety to wear a standard gym kit comprising of black shorts and either a plain white T-shirt or the school polo shirt. Soft shoes (plimsoles) are encouraged as opposed to training shoes as this allows for more flexibility during gymnastics. This kit should be worn on all gym days.

Items of clothing displaying the following are not permitted;

  • Football colours
  • Inappropriate slogans/adverts
  • Items of jewellery that are liable to cause injury if caught or torn.

NURSERY

HMIe Report

Thornliebank Primary Nursery Class Handbook

Thornliebank Nursery Class is part of the school. It has a 40/40 capacity and provides a bright and stimulating environment to support the pre-5 curriculum.

The Nursery Class promotes learning through play and follows the 'National Guidelines 3-5 Curriculum' and uses 'The Child At the Centre' for self-evaluation.

The Nursery Class is inspected by the 'Care Commission' annually.

Children should be registered for a nursery place at 2 years old to request a 3 year old or pre-school place.

Further details can be found in the Nursery Handbook above.

INFANT INDUCTION

Our aim is to make our Primary 1 children’s move from Nursery to school a happy and enjoyable experience. In order to achieve this we try to get to know your child and also help you to prepare your child for school. If your child has attended one of the local nurseries, a member of our staff will have visited the nursery, spoken to the staff and spent some time with your child. Children who attend Thornliebank Nursery Class have a close association with the school and there is a close liaison between the nursery staff and Primary 1 teachers.

The education your child has received, and the progress he/she has made is very important to us. Pre-school education and what your child has learned from you, are the foundations on which primary education is built.

On Thursday mornings and afternoons for 6 weeks in May and June we run our Induction Programme with the help of our nursery staff. On these mornings/afternoons you will be invited to the school with your child. These meetings will give you the opportunity to see round the school, meet your child’s teacher and take part in workshops that offer useful advice.

For your child, the Induction Programme offers many advantages such as getting to know their primary one teacher, their new classmates and becoming familiar with their new surroundings,

At Thornliebank Primary School we want your child to begin Primary 1 feeling secure and happy. Our work with our nursery staff and our Induction Programme helps us to achieve this.

Early in your child’s Primary 1 year you will be invited into school for workshops and also be given opportunities to see your child at work in their class.
