It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Tiverton High School. Let me share with you my beliefs and priorities.

I believe education is the greatest gift we can give our children. With it our sons and daughters can make their way in the world and look forward to a full and fulfilled life. Without it, life is a constant struggle. Consequently making the right choice of school is vital.

We all want our children to be happy at school. I am sure that you will gain the sense that this is a happy school. Our students feel comfortable and ‘at home’. Our staff, teachers and our valued support staff, is committed to the school and the community.

We all want our children to be successful at school. Government statistics regularly show students at Tiverton High School do well. Teachers know their students very well and engage with them as individuals. They know that there is no such thing as an ordinary child; every child is extraordinary in some way and we are committed to releasing that individual spark.

We all want
our children to have plenty of opportunities to experience a wide variety of activities. We became a specialist arts college because we believe creativity is the spark that lights children’s learning and growth. Our school is the largest in the area and so has access to a very broad range of opportunities for all students and that range continues to grow. For example dance now runs alongside music and drama as an outlet for creative performance. We also benefit from the presence of East Devon College on our doorstep. Many older students have access to courses there and we are not constrained by the transport arrangements that make links with colleges so difficult for most schools.

We all want
our children to grow into healthy, happy, balanced adults. Of course examinations are important but probably at the top of most of our lists is that our sons and daughters are successfully guided through their teenage years into adulthood. Tiverton High School has always put particular store by its residential opportunities, outdoor activities (for example our extremely successful Ten Tors teams) and guidance/counselling work. Furthermore, its Citizenship course, for preparing for adult life, has won a national award for its approach.

Schools make a difference to a young person’s life chances, but we can do that best when we work alongside parents. We understand that you know your child best and want to work in partnership with you to do the best we can for your son or daughter.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss anything concerning our school and your child.

I look forward to meeting you.

Andrew Lovett MA
Headteacher

The school ethos

Our whole school ethos has been developed through a process that has involved a great deal of student consultancy. Every student in Tiverton High School took part in producing a set of entitlements and expectations that they felt were vital in allowing them to be successful in their learning. Members of the Student Voice team then drew these expectations into the school ethos and school code document seen below. Each classroom prominently displays this poster and staff and students use it in order to ensure that positive and

attendance

The first line of our School Code says “attend to achieve”. As a school we believe strongly in the need for good attendance throughout the year, and during all Key Stages. We employ a highly efficient electronic register system, and our attendance administrator works hard to ensure that all absences are carefully monitored. Parents can help to keep attendance records up to date by letting the school know when their child is absent from school. Parents can telephone the school on 01884 256655 (extension 255) or send an email to tdaniel@tiverton.devon.sch.uk. Alternatively, parents can leave a note for their child’s tutor in the student planner.

Uniform

It is the wish of governors, parents and staff that all students should be dressed smartly and in such a way as to be identifiably, and proudly, members of the school.  At the same time, it is important that our uniform is sensible, practical and economical.  In addition, no student should be dressed in such a way that would cause an unnecessary distraction to other students or contravene our health and safety regulations.  These factors have been borne in mind when deciding the following lists.  We do hope that all parents will help us to ensure we achieve standards of school wear and tidiness worthy of our school.
