CURRICULUM STATEMENT

The Foundation Stage

The foundation stage begins when children reach the age of three.  Many children attend some form of pre-school or nursery soon after their third birthday.  Children may go to a number of settings during the foundation stage, attending part-time or full-time.  A few will stay at home until they begin first school.

Children will have already learnt a great deal by the time they are three years old.  Many children will have been taken to groups such as parent and toddler groups and some children will have had experience of group settings, such as day centres or home settings with a childminder.  For others, it will be their first experience of a group setting.

At whatever age children begin pre-school or school, they will have had a range of different experiences, they will have learnt a great deal, particularly from their families, and will have varied interests and skills.  Children aged three, four or five are constantly encountering new experiences and seeking to understand them in order to extend their skills, develop their confidence and build on what they already know.  They learn in many different ways.  Children deepen their understanding by playing, talking, observing, planning, questioning experimenting, testing, repeating, reflecting and responding to adults and to each other.

At Trinity, we will plan learning experiences of the highest quality, considering both children's needs and achievements and the range of learning experiences that will help them make progress.  Well planned play is a key way in which children learn with enjoyment and challenge during the foundation stage.  This stage prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7) and is consistent with the National Curriculum.  As children complete the learning in the foundation stage curriculum, teacher start to use the National Curriculum of Key Stage 1 to plan.

The six areas of learning in the Foundation Stage are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Communication, Language and Literacy

  • Mathematical Development

  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World

  • Physical Development

  • Creative Development

From September, staff and governors at Trinity, will put together written policies for early years education, teaching and learning, behaviour and SEN.  Copies will be made available to parents.  These policies will underpin further curriculum subject policies.

For further information on the Foundation Stage see the following websites:

Key Stage 1 Curriculum

Key Stage 1 starts at the end of the Reception year, but the National Curriculum commences as the children are ready.  As the children complete the foundation stage, teaching staff use the National Curriculum to plan.

National Curriculum subjects are:

  • English

  • Maths

  • Science

  • ICT

  • RE

  • Technology

  • History

  • Geography

  • Music

  • Art

  • PE

At Trinity, we will use both Literacy and Numeracy hour guidance within English and Mathematics.  We welcome the emphasis on direct teaching which the Literacy/Numeracy hour offers, whilst fully believing children need to explore the world creatively too.

Music, Art and Dance give the children the opportunity to perform and to express themselves creatively and will always have a high profile at Trinity.

Science, ICT and Technology are very important for all children in our ever changing, improving technological society and we look forward to using state of the art equipment in our Library/ICT room in the school.

History, Geography and RE will be taught through a topic based approach and full use will be made of the Internet and library, for research.  Local services will also add depth and reality to learning.

Physical Education is essential to the Primary School curriculum.  Children at Trinity will be offered PE with both large and small apparatus and an outdoor games curriculum.  We will have competitive sports and children will be encouraged to 'play to win, but never mind losing!'

French is introduced to all children from Reception as part of the weekly timetable.  We believe this increases the children's awareness of the world and gives them a basic foundation for later learning.  We stand by our Christian foundation believing all children are uniquely gifted by God, and it is our duty at Trinity as teachers, to find and encourage that gifting, whether it is academic, creative, physical, emotional or within their character.

Assessment

On entering school, your child will take part in 'Baseline Assessment'.  This is a series of informal activities, which will help assess children's individual needs and so help your child's teacher plan the next steps of their education.  After half term, you will be offered an appointment with the teacher to discuss the baseline assessment, progress and targets for the future.  Targets will be reviewed at the end of the Spring term and a full report given in the Summer term.  At the end of Foundation our profile is completed.

Good communication between parents and teachers is essential.  We will establish a home-school link book and teaching staff are available for appointments at mutually convenient times, to discuss your child's needs and progress.

Special Education Needs

At Trinity, we acknowledge children's individuality in learning, both in the way they learn, visually, practically etc. and in the speed they learn.  We are committed to providing experiences that cater for each and every child.

Some children will require extra individual or small group help, either because they are able or because they have special educational need.  We will follow the National Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs, which is based on acknowledging children's achievements and setting specific achievable targets.  Parents are involved in every step of this progress.

Special Educational Needs come in a variety of forms.  Here are a few websites that provide support:

RE

Acts of collective Christian worship take place each day.  It is a special time when the whole school comes together for reflection and for praise and prayer.  We celebrate our own creation and that of the world and will celebrate school and individual achievements.  Parents have the right to withdraw their children from collective worship and should discuss arrangements for this with the Headteacher.  Religious education is taught within the classroom, through a range of teaching and learning styles, including drama, art and craft activities.  At Trinity we follow the Dorset Agreed Syllabus.

Trinity Links is our friends, parents and teachers association. It is open to everybody with an interest in the good of our school.  Trinity Links meets every half term to share ideas, and plan events.  These are sometimes fundraising, sometimes charitable, and sometimes purely social.

Trinity Links aims to:

  • Forge links between the school, the church, the parents, friends and the community.

  • Raise funds for the school, the community or charity.

  • Provide opportunity for socialising.
