A message from the Headteacher

HeadteacherThank you for showing an interest in our school. I hope our website will provide you with the information you are looking for and give you a feel for Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys.

The words and photographs on the site cannot do us justice though and I would urge prospective parents to visit us to see what we can offer your son and what makes the school such a special place.

Site Development Team
We are putting together a team to consider the long term development of the School site (buildings and facilities). The team will include teachers, support staff, students, governors and – I hope – parents.
Headteacher speech
This is a recording of an edited version of the Headteacher’s address from our open evening. It was recorded after the evening and does not include the student addresses or admissions section. It is possible to download our admissions advice from this website.

The admissions arrangements for 11+ entry are those laid down by the County procedure for entrance to secondary schools. Parents decide, in consultation with their son’s primary school, whether to opt in to the selection process. Following the results of assessment tests, Primary Headteachers will have the opportunity to appeal on behalf of any pupil who has not been awarded a grammar school place. The appeals will be heard by independent panels of Primary and Secondary Headteachers.

The school is normally oversubscribed.

Applicants from out of County schools undertake assessment tests, organised via the Area Education Office, to determine whether a grammar school is the most appropriate type of secondary education for them.

There is a clearly laid down appeals procedure for parents who do not agree with the selection outcome or who are dissatisfied with the allocation of a school place.

Our admission number for Year 7 is 180

Admissions Arrangements for September 2008 - Some Guidelines

Admission Arrangements for September 2008 - For Pupils Living in East Sussex

Welcome to Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys Sixth Form.  The Sixth Form has, at present, about 360 students on role, the majority of whom have come through the school with a few external entrants joining each year

Our aim is to provide the courses you need, give extensive individual counselling and support and provide you with an opportunity to contribute to the real and varied life of the school.

The major difference between lower school (Key Stages 3 & 4) is that you will have chosen to come to this school for your Sixth Form course.  You will become responsible for your own learning and progress with the teaching and library staff to support you and help you achieve your potential.

At the heart of the Sixth Form lies a strong system of pastoral care; you are assigned to a personal tutor, your Form Tutor, one of a team of 17 who are on hand to counsel you in your career and higher education decisions and offer pastoral guidance.

The Sixth Form is a more relaxed and enjoyable way of studying.  Teachers are less formal in their approach and will treat you as an adult, responsible for your own learning and success.  While you will receive a great deal of support, you are expected to demonstrate qualities of self-motivation and diligence, commit yourself to your chosen course of study and contribute to the general life of the whole school.
