The Aims of the Curriculum

The Kent Education Authority requires all schools to adopt the following educational aims:

• To maintain and develop pupils' lively and enquiring minds, to promote the ability to question and argue rationally, to encourage pupils to apply themselves to a range of tasks and skills.

• To emphasise the importance of language, number and aesthetic and physical areas of learning and to develop competence in them.

• To foster attitudes which will install self-confidence in pupils, create in them a sense of personal excellence and help them to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to life and work in a fast-changing world.

• To help pupils to develop perceptive, spiritual and moral values, and an understanding of the religions and beliefs of others.

• To help pupils to understand the world in which they live and the inter-dependence of individuals, groups and nations.

• To develop in pupils the ability to critically appreciate human achievements and aspirations.

The curriculum is the means whereby these aims are pursued.

The Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage begins when children reach the age of three and it continues until the end of the Reception Year. The curriculum falls into six areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication, Language and Literacy, Mathematical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creative Development and it underpins all future learning. Most of these areas are covered through play and practical activities with the Early Learning Goals establishing expectations for most children to reach by the end of the Foundation Stage.


Tunbury School has a uniform and Governors and staff believe that our school uniform adds to the ‘ethos’ of the school. It is worn by all the pupils. The main stockist of our school uniform are Schooltime of 23 Railway Street, Chatham who stock a full range as listed below. Any of the local multiple stores such as BHS and Marks and Spencer also carry most of the items so parents can "shop around" for the best value for money. However, only Schooltime and the school will maintain stocks of the school tie and only Schooltime can guarantee the correct colour of the pullover and/or cardigan.

The full range and description of the uniform is as follows:

*For summer a blue and white gingham or striped dress is recommended.

It would be appreciated if black shoes of a style suitable for school wear were provided. Children are expected to change footwear if they wear wellingtons/boots to school. Shoes with heels are unsafe, and it is requested that parents do not buy girls or boys shoes with high heels. Trainers are not suitable footwear as mud becomes trapped in their soles which when dry drops off about the school. Children need black shoes to wear in school. Plastic or jelly shoes are not suitable, since they break quickly and are the wrong colour.

For safety reasons the wearing of rings on fingers is not permitted. Ear rings should be small stud type only.

Physical Education and Games

Physical Education and Games are compulsory for all children except those temporarily or permanently excluded on health grounds. Such cases must be supported by a letter to the class teacher. Please help your child enjoy Physical Education by providing appropriate clothing. Indoor lessons are performed in bare feet. A bag with your child’s name is required for the following suitable items:-

*In cooler weather children may wear a tracksuit or their normal school burgundy jumper over their P.E. clothes.

For Health and Safety reasons it is imperative that children have a change of footwear for P.E. and Games. The Kent Inspectorate recommends that indoor P.E. is done in bare feet unless excluded on medical advice, (e.g. due to an infection such as verrucae). Trainers or plimsolls are usually suitable for outdoor P.E. though children will normally need boots for football.

Marking Clothes

Occasionally children lose or misplace articles of clothing. Please help your child to keep track of their clothes by marking all garments that they are likely to remove. It is especially important that cardigans, jumpers and P.E. plimsolls are named as these are the most frequently found items in the lost property boxes.
