Welcome to Turnditch

Turnditch is a small village in the beautiful Amber Valley in Derbyshire. The Primary school is the hub of the community. Find out more about our school by using the menu above.

Here's one of our lively classroom displays.

The school was opened as a National School in 1846. It has been extended several times: in 2001, the interior was redesigned and a years 3 and 4 classroom built and in 2005, a new Reception classroom was added. The school will have its own garden in 2006.

As a Church of England Aided Day School for boys and girls up to the age of eleven years, the Diocese of Derby appoints seven of the twelve members of the Governing body.

There will be 72 children on roll in the Summer Term of 2007. The Governors intend to admit 10 children in the year commencing September 2007.

The Trust Deed for our school specifies that it shall be a place of learning for children and adults residing in the chapelry of Turnditch and the neighbourhood.

MISSION STATEMENT

The school aims to be a place of learning which promotes the educational, physical, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all its pupils through the enthusiasm and commitment of the staff and children in a caring, Christian atmosphere.

In recognising and accepting this responsibility the school aims:

  • to promote an ethos based upon traditional Christian values of respect for people and property, courtesy and positive attitudes.
  • to provide an educational environment in which staff are committed to providing a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum to meet the needs of children of all aptitudes and abilities.
  • to enrich the lives of the children through close links with the church and the local community.
  • to involve parents and friends in the life of the school.
  • to promote learning in the context of the National Curriculum and R.E. in a good working environment.
  • to work with other schools for the benefit of staff and children.
  • to use the advice and expertise of outside agencies such as the Diocesan Board of Education. the LEA and National Society for the benefit of the school.
  • to prepare our pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges of secondary education.

ADMISSIONS

Govenors' admission policy

In considering applications for admissions, the Governors will, within the number of children it is intended to admit, give priority to:

1. children in public care;
2. residence in the school’s defined area;
3. siblings of pupils past or present;
4. children of employees of the school;
5. children of regular worshippers at the Parish Church who live outside the school’s defined area;
6. children with special needs which the governors feel can best be met by the school;
7. children who live outside the school’s defined area who are regular worshippers at a Parish Church with no church school;
8. a final choice will be made on the basis of the travelling distance the child lives from the school.

Admission arrangements

Children who will be five between September 1st 2006 and August 31st 2007 begin full time education in September 2006. There is now a common entrance form for all children in Derbyshire. The Governors will require a supplementary application form completing at the same time. This is new national system and sets out to be a fairer system for all children.

All other children, whose applications have been approved, begin on an agreed date.

If, when you have read the above information, you wish to apply to the Governors for your child to be admitted please fill in the Admissions Form and give it to the Headteacher who will submit your application to the Governors.

HOW WE LEARN

A variety of teaching styles is used to help ensure effective learning. Most work takes place in the context of class teaching but there is also a strong element of individual and small group work. Children are expected to read at home and to seek information to support their work at school. How much work children do at home increases gradually through the school.

During a normal school week, the staff spend 23.5 and 22 hours teaching the Juniors and Infants respectively. These hours do not include the daily act of worship, registration, playtimes or dinner.

CURRICULUM

The school endeavours to encourage pupils:

a) to develop lively enquiring minds;
  to question and think rationally;
  to apply themselves to tasks.
b) to acquire knowledge, skills and practical abilities relevant to their environment, present and future.
c) to acquire some understanding of the world environment.
d) to develop a set of attitudes which show respect and understanding of moral, social and cultural values.
e) to develop spiritual values.
f) to appreciate human achievement;
g) to experience a sense of personal achievement.
h) to develop a sense of self respect and independence with the will to contribute to the welfare of others and to society.

We are committed to providing a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum and raising standards for each of the pupils they teach.

This is a Church Aided Primary School. We believe that the school should provide a caring environment where expectations of children are high. We want children to achieve their full potential. Encouragement is given to develop a sense of respect, a high standard of personal achievement and an ability to use character and talents for the benefit of the school and the community.

Since the education of children is a collective responsibility shared by the teachers, parents, governors, Church and community, the life of the school reflects this co-operation. The visits of the local clergy are welcome and the connections with Turnditch Church valued. Links with local industries are also promoted as part of our policy to make effective use of educational opportunities offered by the environment of the school.
