ABOUT US

Twynham School is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school with Leading Edge, Training School and dual Specialist (Technology and Music) Status.

We are proud of our students' academic success, but we value more than this. Opportunities for the involvement by our students in a wide range of activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Orchestras, Drama, Art, Sport, foreign visits and much more, are vitally important to us. The recent outstanding success of the production My Fair Lady at Christchurch's Regent Centre speaks volumes about the school. This was of such a high standard that in the words of many people: "This was not like a school production - and was as good as that which you see on the West End Stage".

CURRICULUM

The Curriculum at Key Stage Three (Years Seven to Nine) includes the Core Subjects of English, Mathematics and Science together with Technology, French, Spanish, German, Geography, History, Religious Education, PSD (Personal and Social Development) Art, Music, Drama and P.E. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is taught throughout the school.

In Year Seven, Mathematics is taught in sets and both Modern Foreign Languages and Science are set for students from Year Eight. At Key Stage Four (Years Ten – Eleven) students are required to study English, Mathematics, Science, Technology and Religious Education.

Additionally, there is a very wide choice of Options including Geography, History, Art, Music, Drama, P.E, Business Studies, ICT, Child Care, Foreign Languages together with the ICT European Computer Driving Licence, Hairdressing and many more.

In the Sixth Form we are able to offer a very wide range and combination of subjects and admission is based on achievement at GCSE.

COMMUNITY

Twynham is a community School and we work closely with our local Community. This includes various groups working with the students as well as the students themselves helping and supporting both individuals and groups within the community.

Our students also represent the youth of Christchurch on the Town‟s Youth Forum; work with numerous outside groups and generally support the community in as many ventures as possible.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

TEACHING AND LEARNING is the main purpose of School and we consider ourselves to be at the cutting edge of educational development. Our own internal review and Ofsted confirms the high quality of teaching and learning within the school and we are constantly seeking to update our practice and to engage with students to aid their learning. A good example of this is the recent development of the „Learning Gateways`.

Students experience a wide range of teaching and learning styles such as group work, individual study, use of information technology, discussion and giving presentations.

Our two Advanced Skills Teachers lead the development of effective teaching and learning across the School at each Key Stage. They also lead vital action research into what makes for successful learning and they work with our feeder Primary Schools so that we can be sure that students continue to make rapid progress as they join us in Year Seven and continue to do so through to Year Thirteen.
