WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

Umberleigh School serves a catchment area comprising the surrounding district of Umberleigh. We have two classes, a Key Stage 1 class (Infants: 4-7 year olds) and a Key Stage 2 class (Juniors: 7/8 – 11 year olds). At present we have 38 children on roll.

The school rents a large field and has a small enclosed area with a play house and wooden play equipment as well as an environmental studies area. We also have a garden, which has been recently developed, and a shubbery, which is a quiet shady area. This summer saw the creation of a new foundation stage play area which is accessible from the infant classroom.

AIMS

At Umberleigh School we aim to develop the enjoyment of, and commitment to learning by providing a broad high quality education for all of our children in a safe and secure environment, as well as giving them a rich variety of experiences. We have high expectations of our children both in terms of their work and their behaviour. The children have developed their own code of behaviour which is reviewed annually and forms part of our personal, social and moral education programme.

We encourage the children to be self-motivated, self-directed and independent, encouraging them to assume responsibility for their own learning and behaviour and to work and co-operate together, skills they will require for the world of work. We believe it is important to raise the children’s awareness of the world beyond their local area and to encourage empathy for and understanding of other societies, cultures and religions.

We aim to develop the children’s self-esteem and confidence by building on their strengths so that they can reach their full potential.

CURRICULUM

n line with the National Curriculum we aim to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for the children at this school. English, Maths and Science are known as the core subjects and form the basis of the curriculum, along with History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Music and Physical Education which are known as the foundation subjects. Information Technology is timetabled each week and is also included across the curriculum wherever possible, and the Religious Education programme is based on the Devon Agreed Syllabus.
