Welcome !!!

I feel extremely proud and privileged to be the Principal of Unity City Academy at an exciting time in its development. Examination results are continuing to rise and together, with a dedicated, well qualified and enthusiastic team of staff will strive to provide the young people and close community of East Middlesbrough with an exciting learning environment. We are looking forward to the opening of the new Applied Enterprise Centre which will support a vision to raise the aspirations of students and the closer community to provide pathways and opportunities for employment, enjoyment and learning in areas where previously these may not have been accessible.

Unity City Academy has been identified as a place where students have good personalised care, support and opportunity. We will continue to build on this and work in partnership with parents, carers and the multi agencies to raise standards and provide a safe, secure learning environment. During the past year we have implemented rigorous systems to ensure we monitor the progress of all students and implement strategies of support earlier to ensure students reach their potential. This is supported by a strong pastoral programme offering care, guidance and support from a multi skilled, multi agency team of teachers and specialist staff. Further programs of personalised learning are accessed through ‘The Inner College’ where accelerated learning focuses on literacy, numeracy and writing.

Students have the opportunity to be placed in a ‘Gifted and Talented’ set. Opportunities are in place and will continually be reviewed for those students who are ‘Gifted’. This may be in Business, Enterprise, PE, Music, Art etc.

The new Applied Enterprise Centre due to open in April 2008 will bring high quality learning environments in areas such as Hair and Beauty, Construction, Film and Digital Media, Horticulture, Kit Car design, Engineering and Cardio Gym to our door step. It will certainly be an exciting time for the community of East Middlesbrough.

We are confident we can build on our recent successes and we look forward to our continued partnership with parents, cares and the closer community.

Robert Dore

Principal

Parent Information
Parents are welcome at Unity City Academy at any time, preferably by appointment, since the staff's teaching commitment is regarded as a priority and we would not want you to have a wasted journey.

The Academy takes pride in the fact that it has always had close links with parents. Communication between the Academy and home takes various forms: Academy Newsletter, letters, telephone conversations and Parents' Forums. There is an answer phone facility outside Academy hours. Also, each year you will receive a copy of the Trustees' Report to Parents. This gives important information on the progress of the Academy, its staff and students, over the previous twelve months. Also included are such items as examination results and attendance figures together with national comparisons.

To enable you to monitor the work your child is doing at the Academy, each student is required to have a Student Planner which you should ask to see regularly so that you know what self study is being set each day and you can check that it is being completed. You should ask to see your child's books when they are at home. If you wish to make comments in the planner please do so. It is also helpful to us if you initial each page as you check it. Should you feel that self study is not being set as appropriate, please contact your child's Personal Tutor or Progress Manager.

The Academy is supported in its endeavours by Friends in Unity of which all parents are automatically members. Organised by a committee of parents and some members of staff, Friends holds events throughout the year to raise funds for the Academy and to offer parents an opportunity to meet together informally for social activities.

Finally, parents are advised that the Academy operates a complete no smoking policy. Parents are requested not to smoke anywhere inside the Academy perimeter. Parents will appreciate that this policy is intended to send a clear health message to all our students.

Special Needs

The Academy's aims state that all students are equally valued and have access to the whole curriculum. All staff are involved in this part of students' education by effective teaching, learning and classroom management and through well established monitoring and evaluation processes. All courses are tailored to the differing abilities and aptitudes of the students and, where possible, individual guidance and support is given by senior staff.
