Sport at Bath

Our Facilities

Team Bath, based at the University of Bath’s main campus at Claverton Down, Bath, enjoys some of the very best sports, recreation, fitness and ancillary facilities in Britain if not the world.

Elite athletes and the public of all abilities and ages can enjoy the £30 million complex which is split over three sites: the Sports Training Village (STV); the Founders Complex and the Sulis Club. The Sulis Club is based just a mile from the campus.

The University of Bath has continually invested in its sports facilities with a major drive from early 2000 onwards bringing about the current world-class STV with funding from the national lottery, the Lawn Tennis Association and the University itself.

The STV (see link below) houses multiple sports spaces of cutting-edge standard. It has four multi-purpose halls, a 50m pool, indoor and outdoor athletics tracks, astroturf pitches, and a martial arts dojo. The Sulis Club is a community-led sports facility near the main complex whilst the Founders Complex contains the original multi-purpose sports hall, squash courts and 25m pool.

Sports Training Village

The Sports Training Village, opened in two phases in 2003 and 2004, is at the heart of Team Bath’s £30 million cluster of sports facilities. Our award-winning building is based on the main University of Bath campus at Claverton Down overlooking the World Heritage city of Bath. It is designed to provide cutting-edge facilities for recreational and performance sportsmen and women alike.

Our state-of-the-art Fitness Suite has been placed at the hub of the Sports Training Village with soGirl on treadmill4.jpgme impressive sports spaces all around it connected by a long and eye-catching galleria. The Fitness Suite has over 100 stations. It features fixed bikes, steppers, running machines and ergometers as well as free and fixed weights. There is also a matted stretching area. Close to the Fitness Suite there are changing rooms, a sauna, hydrotherapy pool and ice bath.

The adjacent main Sports Hall – which is a high-ceilinged and well-lit 16 badminton court size - has a sprung wood floorIndoor hall:STV.jpg and can be adapted for netball, volleyball, basketball, indoor football, fencing, badminton and many more sports. It also has the capacity to hold spectator events, conferences and exhibitions as we can divide the hall into three or more distinct spaces.

Opposite the main multi-purpose Sports Hall there is an indoor eight-court tennis hall which was funded in partnership with theTennis hall through glass.jpg University of Bath by the Lawn Tennis Association. The eights courts are home to a national academy. Separated by a raised viewing walkway, they are blue acrylic.. Being of competition standard, they play host to various tournaments and festivals as well as being available for public hire.

A judo dojo – a purpose-built arena for martial arts training and competition – completes the front sector of the Sports Training Village. This unique dojo is based on traditional designs and features a world-class tatami (mats area) as well as special drying systems for the tatami and judo suits.Judo dojo - geat floor.jpg

To the rear of the Sports Training Village, at ground level, there is a 140m indoor athletics straight with connecting long and triple jump pits. The athletics straight is used for training during the inclement winter months and is connected to the outdoor eight-lane athletics track by a wall of glass doors. As part of the ground floor athletics area there is also an indoor throws and jumps hall which is high enough for indoor pole vault training. This area also has a free weights platform.

The outdoor athletics track is a competition standard eight-lane, synthetic track with full throws areas. It can be used for training or competition purposes and has surrounding spectator areas.

The University of Bath Sports Training Village is home to the national modern pentathlon squad. That means we have a fencing salle and pistol shooting in a hall on the ground floor.

Between the tennis hall and the athletics track Team Bath boasts one of the few 50m swimming pools in the country. Emma Robinson 2.JPGThe pool has a uniform 2m depth and is ideal for elite training and competition as well as for those who wish to swim for fitness or fun. The pool has already staged a number of national meets and is home to an ever-expanding Team Bath Swimming programme.

Overlooking the pool area Team Bath has treatment rooms and a laboratory which form part of our Health/Lifestyle and Sport Science services. Here the public and/or elite athletes can receive physiotherapy, sports medicine and health screening as well as lifestyle management advice.

In the connecting links between our sports facilities there are a number of classrooms and meeting rooms which can be used for conferences and briefings.

At the rear of the building our Sports Café/bar has a view over the athletics track, grass pitches and Astroturf hockey pitches and on to the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The café has an outdoor terrace as well as indoor seating area.smilers.jpg

Adjacent to the Sports Training Village there are two sets of outdoor tennis courts – clay and hard-courts. These are a great addition to the indoor facilities and are also used for recreation and performance-based events and training.

Finally, for those seeking something different, the Sports Training Village has its own bobsleigh and bob-skeleton push-start track. This is designed to simulate the start section of a full-sized track for these winter sports.
