Money Matters
We know how daunting and complicated student finance can be so we’ve split up this section into three distinct areas to help you access and understand the information you need quickly and easily.
Tuition fees
A new fee system for UK/EU students 'pay as you earn not as you learn'
If you are a full-time UK/EU student1 and plan to start a degree course2 in or after the 2007 academic year, you will not need to pay your university tuition fees, provided you have made an application through your Local Education Authority to the Student Loans Company for a loan, until you have graduated or left the University, and are earning a good salary.
Although universities can vary the amount they charge in fees, nearly all (including the University of Bedfordshire) will be charging full-time UK/EU students, £3,070 per year for undergraduate honours degrees (but, in the University of Bedfordshire’s case, £1,225 will be charged for foundation degrees).
So, instead of students or parents having to pay up-front3, they can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC), which is not repayable until the student is earning the equivalent of £15,000 or more (current UK threshold).
1. Different arrangements apply to part-time and international students (including international students resident in the UK). 2. Different fee arrangements apply to some courses such as nursing, midwifery and social work. 3. Students or their families can still choose to pay on entrance.
Tuition Fees Policy - important information for all students
The University's Tuition Fees Policy contains the terms and conditions and arrangements for paying fees, refunds and administrative charges. All students should read and understand this policy before accepting a place at the University.
Graduates over 21
If you have already completed an undergraduate degree and are over 21, special fee arrangements apply. Please contact Ian Marshall on 01582 489347 or email ian.marshall@beds.ac.uk

Frequently asked Questions
Q. Why did fees change in 2006?
The UK Parliament decided that from 2006 UK and EU students entering higher education will no longer have to pay university tuition fees while they study. Instead the fees are paid back once the student has graduated and is earning over £15,000.
Q. How much is the University of Bedfordshire charging in 2007?
Like most universities, Bedfordshire will charge £3,070 for honours degrees and from £1,225 for foundation degrees.
Q. How much financial support will I receive from the University of Bedfordshire in 2007?
You could receive up to £4,100 of financial support from the University of Bedfordshire, depending on your circumstances. This is in the form of bursaries and scholarships.
Q. So, when do I pay the fees?
Fees will only be payable once you have graduated or left university and are earning a salary of £15,000 or more. If you choose to live and work abroad after graduating, the repayment threshold may vary.
Q. Will I have to pay interest?
Interest will be charged at the rate of inflation, so you will not pay back more, in real terms than you borrowed.
Q. How much will the repayments be?
As a guide, if you are earning £18,000 you will be expected to pay at a rate of about £5.20 a week.
Q. Will I end up with this debt for the rest of my life?
No! As you start earning more your repayments will increase helping to pay off the fees and, after 25 years the debt is cleared regardless of how much you have paid back. It is expected that most people will have cleared their debts after 13 years.
Q. So, what financial support do I get while I am at the University?
There is a lot of financial support available to you both from the Government and the University. More details is available here for UK students and here for EU students
Q. Can I work part-time to earn some extra cash while I’m studying?
The University of Bedfordshire has a dedicated Job Shop at the Luton campus designed to help you find the right part-time job to fit around your studies. On average, students can expect a part-time job to involve 20 hours per week, at approximately £6 per hour. There are many opportunities for part-time work in and around Luton and Bedford, in areas such as retail and entertainment, or within the University or Student Union.
Q. What about students coming to study at the University of Bedfordshire from abroad?
Students coming to study an undergraduate degree from other EU countries will pay the same as home students here in the UK. Students from outside the EU pay the University’s international fee.
Q. If I decide to study part-time what difference will that make?
If you decide to study part-time or at postgraduate level you will need to pay the course fees up front. These fees vary depending on the course being studied.
