About

The University of Bolton came into being in January 2005 when the Privy Council gave approval for its title choice. Bolton Institute of Higher Education had become Britain’s newest university the previous April when the Privy Council approved University Title for the higher education institution. Between those two dates an extensive consultation process had taken place with the university’s partners and stakeholders over what that title should be.

The University of Bolton is a public resource for knowledge and learning, working with and on behalf of people and organisations to solve practical problems.

We strongly believe that learning is fundamental to the transformation of individuals and society.

We are unrelenting in our desire to stay abreast of commercial, social, cultural and economic change and incorporate its impact in our courses and in our work with partners.

We celebrate excellence in others and willingly bring their good practice back into the university and into our partnerships.

We are proud that all elements of society are fully represented among our staff, students and partner organisations.

We embrace diversity and value difference.

We show adaptability, rigour and flexibility in identifying and meeting the needs of individuals and organisations.

We respect and value the traditional role and achievements of scholars and universities, while seeking to create a model of higher education which is focused on innovation and application.

n the past three years the number of studentsapplying to join the University of Bolton has doubled.

We have been investing in creating new, exciting facilities for our students, for study and recreation. We have just announced plans to create a students' union and social learning zone right in the centre of our Deane Campus site, completing a student centre which will be the size of a football pitch. This is part of an £8million building programme which includes new, purpose-built facilities for arts subjects.

We have just completed an £11.3m building programme which included the £6m Design Studio and a two-floor suite of state-of-the-art teaching rooms.

We have around 9,000 students, including international students from more than 70 countries. Around 80% of students come from Bolton and the north-west, and around eight per cent come from countries outside the UK.

Almost 50% of our students are part-time, and more than 60% of our first-year, full-time undergraduate students are mature-age students.

The university has a higher-than-average proportion of disabled students, and is one of the leading universities in the country for supporting students with additional needs.

The university also has one of the country’s most ethnically diverse student populations, with around 13% of home students from ethnic minority communities.

The university is one of Bolton’s largest employers with more than 700 staff, and is a major contributor to the town with income of around £37 million.

Around 10% of its income comes from research.
