Applying for halls
Accommodation information, including how to apply for halls is sent out from April onwards.
The information will be sent to you by email, unless you have asked for a copy by post or do not have an email contact. It is therefore very important that you advise us of any changes to your email and postal addresses. You will receive the information once you have received an offer of a place at the university.
The majority of places in halls of residence are offered to first year undergraduate students. Priority is given to students who have firmly accepted an unconditional offer and returned their completed accommodation application form to us by 15 July.
Students who are paying international fees are guaranteed a place in hall in the first year of their course if they firmly accepted an unconditional offer and return their completed accommodation application form to us by 15 July.
Brighton
The university has halls of residence in 4 locations in Brighton. Over half of the rooms have en-suite facilities. All students share kitchen and communal areas and standard rooms share bath/shower facilities. There are laundry facilities on each site and all rooms are fully furnished and centrally heated.
Eastbourne
The university has one large hall of residence with accommodation for over 350 students in Eastbourne and all rooms have en-suite facilities. There are laundry facilities on site and all rooms are fully furnished and centrally heated.

The cost of your rent will vary depending on which halls you are in, and what style of room your are renting. For further information see the details for each hall:
Allocation
Please ensure that you read our full accommodation allocation policy. Arrangements differ for students with disabilities, students on postgraduate, nursing and Brighton and Sussex Medical School courses and also for students on a placement year or who live in East and West Sussex.
All accommodation is mixed sex and catered or self-catered options are available. There are catering outlets near each hall and the university operates a flexible meals package where pre-paid meal vouchers are available.
University Managed Housing
The Accommodation Office directly manages around 300 rooms in shared houses and flats in Brighton, Hove and Eastbourne.
These properties are owned privately and the university has signed a contract with the owners to manage the properties.
The scheme allows groups of between two and six students to live together in houses and flats. The university manages the properties, students sign a contract with the university and pay their rent direct to the university.
Rents are competitive and include personal contents insurance. Contracts are mainly joint tenancies and normally for 42 weeks.
Unlike letting agents, we do not ask for rental guarantors.
All properties comply with a high safety standard and have mains-linked smoke alarms, fire doors in the kitchen, gas safety certificates and electrical safety certificates renewed every five years.

Availability for first years
University managed accommodation is generally available to returning students. There are, however, occasionally vacancies available for first years. Vacancies are advertised on studentpad.
Living in the private sector
Brighton
Students comprise about a tenth of the population and are well-integrated in the city, living alongside working people as well as other students.
Brighton and Hove City Council operates an accreditation scheme to encourage owners and landlords to raise and maintain the quality of their flats or houses. The universities of Sussex and Brighton work together to ensure that rents remain within reasonable limits for their students.
Whilst living in halls of residence is the preferred option of most first years, many realise that living in the heart of the city close to the shops, pubs and clubs has its own advantages as does choosing the people you live with!
Eastbourne
Many students at the university choose to live in private sector accommodation, and we can assist and advise you about what is available in the local housing market. The university sites are close to the town centre and seafront, with transport links, shops and other amenities all within easy reach.
A variety of accommodation options are available and many of our landlords have been housing our students for a number of years.
