Prospective Students Information

Bristol is the university of choice for exceptional numbers of talented applicants and our academic departments offer a huge variety of programmes.

It is not hard to see why the University is popular – there are at least ten good reasons to choose Bristol. If you have never visited Bristol, take a look at the picture gallery to see what it's like.

Our Widening Participation Strategy reflects our commitment to recruiting the applicants with the greatest academic potential – whatever their social or educational background.

We have plenty of information for schools and colleges, including details of careers events, higher education fairs, and talks for sixth-formers and parents.

Admissions policy

We welcome applications from talented candidates of all backgrounds and we are committed to promoting equal opportunities. The life of the University is enriched by having a body of students which reflects the community at large and includes students from all parts of the UK (including the local area), from other EU countries and from overseas, and which contains mature students as well as people who come straight from school or college. We select people who have the ability and motivation to benefit from their intended programmes of study and who will make positive contributions to the life of the University.

Undergraduate students

The University offers excellent programmes of study sustained by teaching of the highest quality for undergraduate students. We have over 200 undergraduate programmes. See the online undergraduate prospectus for full details, request a prospectus, or visit the departmental websites for further information.

Admissions are dealt with in accordance with a clear set of principles and procedures:

It is a requirement of the Admissions Principles and Procedures that there is a detailed Departmental Admissions Statement for each undergraduate degree programme.

Postgraduate students

The University conducts top-level research across the whole range of disciplines. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, 78 per cent of the University's departments were judged as world class or internationally excellent. A full list of the postgraduate research and taught programmes available is in the online postgraduate prospectus, and you can also visit the departmental websites for further information. Feel free to request a printed prospectus, but please bear in mind that this is a direct copy of our online text. Finally, if you are ready to make an application you can download a form, complete it and send it to the relevant faculty office. Further admissions advice for international students is available, or you can view the International Student Website for a broader range of information and support.

Lifelong learning opportunities

The University offers many flexible ways of learning, including part-time and short courses carrying University of Bristol credit and a wide range of lifelong learning opportunities such as free events and residential summer schools. Further details about these courses are available online or you can request a prospectus.

International students

International students currently make up 16 per cent of the student body coming from over 100 countries and add greatly to the educational and social experience available at the University. The University has links with many universities and colleges in other countries. The University's International Centre provides information on how to apply for prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Admissions are dealt with in accordance with overseas undergraduate principles and procedures.

Information about suitable English Language tests can be found in our English Language Entry Requirements policy.
