Why Buckingham?

Buckingham is unique

Why choose Buckingham? Well, take a look at the top 10 good reasons to study here and you'll see.

1. How good are we?

So just how good is Buckingham? Don't take our word for it, find out what our independent audit, conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency, and the National Student Survey 2006 had to say.

2. You gain a traditional 3-year degree in just 2 years

Buckingham's honours degrees only take two years to complete so you can take a year out and still graduate with your peers. Students gain their degrees in just two years because they work intensively and efficiently with very short vacations. There's no cutting of corners and no 'distance learning'. You can start your degree in September, January or July. Find out how we fit everything in.

3. Guaranteed student accommodation in the first year

All students at Buckingham are guaranteed a room in student accommodation on-campus during their first year of study, provided that they complete and return their accommodation contract in advance. The attractive, quiet, safe campus provides the perfect place to study (although there are plenty of activities for those taking a study-break!).

4. Life skills

You will leave Buckingham with much more than your honours degree. The life skills you'll learn here will stand you in good stead for life in the workplace. We have a high graduate employment rate with many of our graduates going on to work in high profile positions at top companies or studying for higher degrees at world-renowned universities.

5. Student:academic staff ratio

Buckingham's student to staff ratio puts us among the top UK universities. We have one member of staff for every 9.7 students, whereas the UK university average is one member of staff to every 17.5 students. This ensures you get more personal attention and make faster progress - high teaching quality and a genuinely friendly atmosphere go hand in hand.

6. Global community

Buckingham is truly a global community with students of all cultures and ages. Over 80 countries are represented here, although our largest group still comes from the UK. Our international atmosphere is perfect for anyone who has enjoyed discovering different cultures, perhaps during a gap year. Our dedicated AlumNet website ensures that everyone stays in touch with each other and with Buckingham long after they leave.

7. High IT spend

We spend more per student on information technology (IT) than most universities in the UK; only four others spend more.

8. Dedicated care and support

Our personal and attentive service at Buckingham is perfect for students who need a little extra help. A high and continuous level of care and support is maintained from both an academic and a pastoral point of view.

9. Leading academic staff and small group teaching

Our academic staff are not just figureheads as in some institutions. They all teach their subject through lectures and tutorials and they are available to speak individually to students on a regular basis. Our largest lecture hall accommodates 186 students and tutorials are in small groups of 8-10 students. You are never lost in the crowd at Buckingham.

10. Buckingham is independent

Buckingham remains unique because, unlike other UK Universities, we do not receive direct subsidy from the Government and so we can focus on the student rather than worrying about regulatory interference.
