Uplands has a strong reputation for its provision of quality education for boys and girls and helping each individual to develop their full potential and I hope we can help you in finding the right school for your child.
Our Aims
At Uplands we aim to provide a positive and happy environment in which all pupils feel secure, confident and inspired to learn. We provide a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum which promotes the academic, social, moral, physical and cultural development of each and every child in our care. Pupils are encouraged to become independent and creative learners and to foster high levels of self esteem. Our small class sizes, with an average of 15 pupils in each class, ensure that each child’s progress is monitored closely and teaching is tailored towards the needs of the individual. The curriculum at Uplands is based on the National Curriculum but with additional subjects, and pupils are prepared for Key Stage Tests. Our teaching methods cater for a range of abilities, and performance in the Key Stage Tests is above the national average.

Parent / School Partnership
We believe that education involves teachers working in partnership with pupils and parents. Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress through end of term reports and regular parent consultation meetings. We also actively encourage parents to contact the school if they have any issues they wish to discuss. There is an active Friends of Uplands Association which organises many regular social events both for parents and pupils. The Parent/Teacher Council creates a regular forum where everyday school provision can be discussed between parents, all Uplands teaching, administrative and support staff, and the Headteacher.
Visitors to Uplands frequently comment on the friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the school and this is something we all work hard to preserve. At Uplands we combine modern teaching methods with traditional values to provide an environment where each pupil feels appreciated, trusted and valued and where they feel they will receive the individual attention that they need and deserve.
Uplands is a member of the Independent Schools Council.

MISSION STATEMENT :

We aim to:

• establish a caring, happy, secure, supportive and stimulating environment in which all members of our school feel confident that they can make a positive contribution

• work together as a team to promote high quality teaching and learning in order to become a place of excellence where all members of the school community can recognise and achieve full potential in their academic, personal, moral and spiritual development

• provide a balanced curriculum with challenging, interesting and relevant learning experiences for all pupils, encouraging enthusiasm, optimism, independence, curiosity and the skills for lifelong learning

• establish that learning is worthwhile, rewarding and central to living today, being the route to personal satisfaction, academic success and gaining an understanding of life

• enable all members of our school to meet the challenges of a changing society in which all can make their best contribution as responsible citizens

• foster an acceptance of responsibility for our own actions and a tolerance of the views of others, ensuring that all are valued and respected as individuals

• maintain an awareness of our global citizenship and our responsibility to our environment

• establish a “can do” culture

Extra-curricular Activities
Pupils enjoy a variety of educational trips which help to enrich the curriculum. In addition to the academic subjects, the broad approach to education at Uplands is complemented by a range of extra curricular activities in which all pupils are encouraged to participate. Such activities include chess; choir;dance; drama; Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award; instrumental bands and a variety of sports (including basketball and trampoline).
All pupils take part in a wide range of sporting activities throughout the academic year as part of the normal curriculum. These include football, rugby, hockey, netball, rounders, tennis, athletics and swimming.

Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme is open to all students in years 10 and 11 at Uplands. The Award is a challenging programme of activities which encourages participants to discover and develop personal interests and social and practical skills, to help individuals or the community at large, to improve their performance in a sport or physical activity, and to enjoy the spirit of adventure and discovery in the outdoors. The Bronze and Silver Awards can be undertaken at Uplands, after which the Gold Award can be embarked upon. Our students have taken up playing the guitar, helped look after nursery children, improved their sailing and camped in the Purbeck Hills.
This is what some of our students have said about their participation:
"good to learn and relax with a new skill......teaches you to cope without creature comforts....great fun.....helps team work and to be understanding of other people....an experience that you might not otherwise have done."
Many organisiations such as colleges, universities and employers take a good view of the Award and what it says about the person who has achieved it.
