Vinehall School Badge

Vinehall is a co-educational day and boarding school for children aged between 2 and 13. We enjoy wonderful views across the Sussex countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as an impressive array of facilities.

Vinehall is unusual in combining a noticeably friendly and happy atmosphere with impressive achievements academically, in music, drama, art and also sport.

I look forward to welcoming you to the school so that you can meet the children and staff who make our school such a rich and busy learning environment. In the meantime, we hope that you will enjoy these web pages which offer a taste of the Vinehall atmosphere.

Deep in the heart of the Sussex countryside

At Vinehall a dedicated team works hard to make boarding an extremely attractive option. In addition to academic support, the children also benefit enormously from a wide range of activities and opportunities at a well resourced school located deep in the heart of the Sussex countryside.

Vinehall has a well-established boarding community of boys and girls. It is very much the heart of the school. A few of our boarders are from overseas or other parts of the country. Most are local children. Boarding is ‘full’ rather than on a weekly basis although there are regular exeat weekend breaks and boarders may go out for special occasions. Families are welcome to visit.

VALUES

At Vinehall we believe that every child is blessed with many talents and it is our purpose and duty to discover these talents and nurture them as best we can.

Vinehall is a close, caring and busy community in which staff and parents are expected to work very much as a team, with the children as our central concern.

We value all members of the school community, whatever their role, and welcome initiative and ideas for school improvement.

We combine traditional teaching methods and high expectations with a forward-looking and flexible approach. The staff are dedicated professionals who seek to inspire.

There is a school Chaplain and, while the ethos is grounded in Christianity, we welcome children of all faiths.

The main charitable focus is the Rwanda Mission and thousands of pounds are raised each year for a variety of charitable causes.

The school motto is 'to do our best for the benefit of others'.

As a school we aim to:

  • Provide an excellent all-round education both academically and through an impressive range of extra-curricular activities. There are opportunities for all and those who are especially talented can reach the highest levels of attainment.
  • Develop in each child independence, commitment and enthusiasm.
  • Foster a spirit of mutual respect and kindness and encourage everyone to do their best for the community.
  • Encourage every child to participate fully in life and to learn about themselves and their place in the world.

BOARDING

A team of matrons, laundry staff, tutors, duty teachers, Gap assistants and house parents ensure that our boarders are happy. There are plenty of activities laid on in the evenings and at weekends. The children can enjoy playing with friends and making full use of the excellent resources. Golf, bike riding, roller blading, swimming and games in the sports hall are all on offer. In addition, there are art and drama workshops, visiting entertainers, discos and all manner of other social activities to keep the children cheerful and busy. Prizes are awarded to dorms throughout the year and the dorms themselves are comfortable, bright and offer super views of the surrounding countryside.

The boarders have plenty of support academically. There are regular supervised prep sessions and staff offer individual help with reading, times tables, spellings and so on. A tutor system has also been introduced to help children with their studies. We aim to guide the children through their busy week and at the same time look to encourage more independence and initiative so that the children learn how to prioritise their various activities and studies. Above all we aim to ensure that a balanced programme is reached so that the boarders are well rounded individuals who can approach their senior schools with confidence.

Boarders enjoy access to a range of wonderful facilities and many of our boarders have been successful scholars.

PRE-PREP

Vinehall Nursery, Kindergarten and Pre-Prep

Welcome to Vinehall Pre-Prep. Our school is situated beside the Preparatory School, sharing the extensive grounds, with wonderful views across open countryside. The Nursery, Kindergarten and Pre-Prep are accommodated in a single, purpose-built school with its own hall and library area. We aim to foster a happy, caring family atmosphere and the small ratio of children to adults allows us to get to know the children really well.

We aim to help children reach their true potential and give them the confidence to achieve in all areas of school life. Personal, Social and Emotional development are just as important to a young child as academic achievement and we ensure that children learn good manners, develop the ability to share, learn to care for others and take on responsibility.

Promoting the self-confidence and self-esteem of our children within a happy and caring atmosphere is central to the teaching and learning in the Pre-Prep.

At Vinehall Pre-Prep we provide a broad, balanced and high quality education which is aimed at developing the children socially, intellectually and physically, standing them in good stead for the future years. We welcome visitors to our happy and vibrant school and look forward to having the opportunity to show you around.

To make an appointment please contact:
The Registrar, Lorna Lambourne on 01580 883090

CURRICULUM

Vinehall is a partly-selective school whose aim is to give our pupils a broad, all-round education. Our principal aim is to encourage our pupils to make the most of every opportunity and to enable them to achieve the highest standards of academic, cultural and athletic achievement of which they are capable. This is done by fostering a sense of self-discipline and organisation in the pupils.

The curriculum is based on the structure laid down by the Early Years and then the National Curriculum up to Year 6, whilst allowing us the freedom to develop certain parts of the curriculum further, where appropriate. In Years 7 and 8 the curriculum is determined by the Syllabi for Common Entrance and Scholarships through which we prepare the pupils for entrance to schools of their parents’ choice at 13+.

A stimulating and well-structured programme is used to deliver the curriculum including a sensible mix of formal and informal work. At times the pupils are expected to listen, take notes and write or learn quietly, whilst at other times they will be working in groups, discussing or sharing their ideas in an investigative way. They are encouraged to show initiative and enterprise, to co-operate together and to research effectively for themselves.
