Welcome to the Wallands School!

We are proud of our happy and high achieving school situated between the northern-west edge of Lewes and the South Downs.

Wallands is the largest primary school in Lewes with 2 classes in each year group and a Nursery. It was built in 1951 and is a classic 1950’s building which, bit by bit, we are bringing up to date, including the recent addition of new classrooms. We have fabulous school grounds and play facilities with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.

Wallands was praised as a "particularly successful school" by OFSTED in 2004.

The excellent morning Nursery is staffed by a fully qualified teacher and is the perfect preparation for starting school and we provide afternoon childcare on the same site. This is available to children from the term after their 3rd birthday and provides 3 hour sessions.

The school is fully adapted for wheelchair access.

We are a school that is very open to parents. There are regular consultations with pupils and parents, and  parents are invited into class once each half term to celebrate their child's work. Many parents volunteer regularly to work in class.

The PTA are very active and provide many social and fundraising events for the school including our famous Discos!

You may read our Development Plan in the Prospectus or in the Governors Annual Report.

We hope you enjoy this website and that it is useful for you. Please note the “contact us” details.

PTA

We are an enthusiastic and active group of parents and carers supporting the school by organising social events and raising funds. Throughout the year we hold many events including a Summer Fair, Christmas Fayre, Wassail Evening, Quiz Nights and Childrens Discos. Funds raised have helped purchase playground equipment, books, scooters and digital projectors to name a few.

We also run an after school swimming club using the schools own outdoor pool, and provide refreshments in support of many of the school events.

We always welcome volunteers to help at these events. Please contact Jane Reid via the PTA pigeonhole or your PTA class representative if you would like further information.

On this page you will find details of the current Chair, Secretary and Treasurer together with a list of the PTA class representatives.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

The Wallands School Council meets every week at 12.30 on a Thursday. The members are elected in September each year by secret voting in classes, with a boy and a girl from each class from year 1 upwards. The headteacher chairs the council for the first half-term to demonstrate how to do it and then a chairperson and secretary are elected from amongst the members.

Most of the council's time is spent discussing items placed in the suggestions box. The suggestion boxes at present are on the office front desk and on the table by the dining hall. Notes are written from each meeting and these are read out by each teacher in class and now put on this website under "Information". School Council also arrange Fundraising Fridays each term, consider which charities to raise money for and sometimes do a school magazine. School council can also report back at assemblies.

Although not all suggestions are agreed with by the council, many useful improvements have been made around the school as a result of pupil suggestions.

A full list of members and Minutes from meetings are stored under the Information Sheets section of this web-site.
