The Curriculum at West Bank

At West Bank Primary we have a unique curriculum, specifically designed to meet the needs of the children of West Bank . We guarantee to build on the skills and knowledge acquired every year to enable all the children to progress onwards and upwards in all subjects of the National Curriculum.

As with most schools teaching children between the ages of 3 and 11 there is a nationally designed curriculum which dictates what we should cover. In Nursery and Reception Classes (collectively known as the Foundation Stage) we cover the Foundation Curriculum in the six recognised areas of: Communication, language & literacy, Mathematical development, Personal, social & emotional development, Knowledge & understanding of the world, Physical development and Creative development.

Our Sunshine Certificate system ensures that all parents and children are constantly made aware of progress made, and can be proud of their achievements. All children receiving Sunshine Certificates are mentioned in the weekly newsletter to all parents. Our children also receive a swimming lesson every week from a qualified instructor in our learners pool, working their way through duckling and swimming awards. Many children can swim without assistance before they leave the Foundation Stage due entirely to the support and instruction they receive in school.

Into Key Stage 1 and 2 the weekly swimming lessons continue, but that is not why our curriculum is unique. As you would expect, like most other schools, we cover the entire National Curriculum.

In West Bank however we recognise the need for continuity and have, therefore, redesigned the entire package to ensure that the work that goes on in any class complements what is taught in the classes that come before and after. All teachers know what has been taught and achieved in the year below and can plan their lessons to make the most of early progress and development. For our gifted and talented pupils we have also written an extension to the primary curriculum.

Nursery

The Nursery Day

Children can attend West Bank Nursery for either the morning or afternoon session. The only criteria are that a child has reached their 3rd birthday. The times are as follows:

  • Morning - 9.05 - 11.35
  • Afternoon - 12.35 - 3.05
Breakfast Club

A Breakfast Club is available everyday from 8.50.

Cost

West Bank Nursery is part of a state run Primary School, therefore places are free of charge.

Snacks

Healthy, sugar free snacks are prepared and served each day.

Swimming

We feel that it is very important for children to learn to swim. We are fortunate to have our own modern teaching pool which is used by children throughout the school from Nursery to Year 6. There is no charge for this activity as the School fully funds the costs. Every Wednesday, our Nursery children are taught by a qualified swimming instructor, who stays with them in the pool at all times.

If you would like to make an appointment to come and look around the Nursery, we would be very pleased to see you. Please contact the school on 0151 424 2799.

Extra Curricular

A Breakfast Club is available before school everyday from 8.00 am. Cereal, fruit, and a range of hot food are available. Drinks including milk and a range of pure fruit juices are also served. Hot food needs to be ordered in advance, whilst cereal, fruit, toast and drinks are always readily available.
