The History of our School
Whitehouse started off as a mainstream primary in 1978, but following the closure of Summerhouse, a school for pupils with physical difficulties, in 1987, staff and pupils transferred to Whitehouse. This was the start of our journey towards the school we are today; a school recognised for the inclusion of its whole community.

We are very proud of the fact that all pupils take part in every aspect of school life including residential and day educational visits, Christmas Productions and a Summer Show, musical as well as numerous sporting events. In fact this year the school had a very special visitor in July, when the whole school took part in Sports Aid. Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson made a special visit to Whitehouse to meet with children and staff taking part in this event.

At Whitehouse we are always keen to embrace any new initiatives and technology; this is why ICT is particularly at the forefront of our agenda for inclusion. Many of our children with additional needs depend on ICT to support their curriculum access. Over the past few years, as part of our school improvement work, all teaching areas have interactive whiteboards connected to the internet; pupils with recording difficulties have access to word processing equipment and in some instances their own laptops.

A Soundfield system has also been installed throughout the school. In other schools Soundfield is mainly used with pupils with hearing impairments as it provides better classroom acoustics, however at Whitehouse we have found that all our children benefit from having better sound clarity, something also supported by research in this area.
