Widecombe Primary School it is our aim that school should be a stimulating and exciting place to be, and that learning should be an adventure for our children. We believe in education for now, as well as for the future. Children should be enabled to discover, find out, and learn about the world around them, and it is our task to keep opening doors to new experiences and areas of knowledge.

We want our children to think and work like historians, scientists, mathematicians etc. and share the excitement of discovery, so we base our learning on first hand experience where possible and appropriate.

For this reason, school trips and events are very important. We try to make them as meaningful, relevant and fun as possible and ensure that they really add to our children’s experiences. The events will depend upon the topics being covered in class and also on the time of year but the following list will give you a flavour of what has happened over the past year alone;

We have visited Exeter Museum as part of our topics on Romans and Egyptians, Longleat when we studied the Tudors and a local pottery to design and decorate our own pots.

Over the past year we have had storytellers, Adventure Challenge, local authors, dance groups, musicians, bakers and a myriad of pets on the ever popular Pet Day!

National Events:  W annually take part in charity events such as Make a Difference Day, Red Nose Day.

Music:  We have had visits from musicians from Japan and India, held a whole school music week and taken part in school concerts.

Last year we had our first whole school Art Week where the children made mosaics, took part in screen printing, sculpting and art workshops at South Dartmoor.  The following week the work was displayed at an incredible art exhibition at Church House, Widecombe.  It was such a success that we now plan to make it an annual event and this year the exhibition will tour Dartmoor where visitors will be able to see the children’s work both in Widecombe and at the Princetown Visitors Centre.

Widecombe Primary School has three classes named after the rivers in the village; Webburn for children in the Foundation Stage, Reception, Year 1 & 2, Lower Dart for Year 3 & 4 and Upper Dart for Year 5 & 6 children.

We aim to:

Ø                Ensure that learning is enjoyable, stimulating and fun.

Ø               Enable all children to be articulate, literate and numerate and achieve beyond their expectations

Ø                Encourage an effective partnership with parents and carers and the wider community.

Ø                Offer a warm, welcoming environment and learning community where every individual understands their roles and responsibilities and respects the views and opinions of others.
