Choosing a school for your child can be very difficult. You have to be sure that the school you choose will be the right one for your child and that they will be able to progress socially,
emotionally and academically in a safe, secure environment.

Parents are encouraged to visit the school so that they can make informed secisions. Although all schools follow the National Curriculum the ethos and culture within a school may vary from neighbouring schools. It is only when you see a school at work that you can
really decide whether it is the school for your child.

Healthy Schools
Basic Skills

As a school we aim to work in partnership with parents. It is an area that we are continually striving to develop as a close partnership makes a significant contribution to a child’s learning and can help both home and school better meet the needs of each individual.

An important part of school is learning how to learn. The best learning takes place when the children are happy, relaxed and are actively involved in their education. They need a belief in themselves and a trust in the people they are working with. We aim to provide a learning environment that meets the needs of the children in our care.

If, after reading this prospectus, you are interested in finding out more about the school please do not hesitate to make an appointment to discuss any concerns you may have and to view the school in operation.

Our Aims

  • Teach the children to be learners for life.
  • Inspire all children to learn by providing creative, stimulating and challenging opportunities.
  • Value the strengths, achievements, cultures and beliefs of all.
  • Encourage children to respect themselves, others, their school and their community.
  • Provide opportunities for everyone’s emotional, physical, social and academic growth.
  • Provide a safe, secure and well managed community environment.
  • Support and further develop relationships with parents, the school community and the wider community.
  • Encourage parents/carers to take an active part in their child’s education.

Our School

Our school offers spacious accommodation that includes sixteen classroom bases, hall/dining area and extensive grounds. We also have an ICT suite and a library. The school is arranged around a central administrative area with three corridors leading from this. As we work very closely with a range of different agencies we have a community wing that accommodates the health team from ‘Sure Start’and also has space for a range of community activities.

Willowbrook has a mixed intake of approximately 250 pupils of ages 3 - 11 years. The Planned Admission Number for the main school is 55 in each year group. The nursery has 52 children, 26 in the morning and 26 in the afternoon. We are therefore a large primary school in Exeter.

The school has an ‘inclusive’ policy. This means that we accept all children as part of our school community and we work hard to meet the individual needs of all pupils. We celebrate difference and value each member of our school community.

Session Times

School starts at 8.55 in the morning. The doors will be open to allow children into the school 10 minutes before that time. School ends at 3.15pm

Lunch times: Lower school (reception - year 2) 12 - 1pm Upper school (years 3 - 6) 12.30 - 1.30pm

Registration takes place during the first 10 minutes of each session. It is therefore important that your child arrives promptly.

Late arrival can be disruptive for your child and for the whole class. Any late arrivals must report to the main office in order to be registered.

School Uniform

School uniform should be worn by all children. The uniform consists of:

  • ‘Kingfisher’ sweatshirt (obtainable from Thomas Moore in Exeter); white shirt; grey/black trousers/skirt; sensible shoes (no bright trainers allowed or shoes with high heals).

The children require a change of clothes for PE. For PE they should have:

  • White T-shirt; black shorts; plimsolls; a PE bagto keep their change of clothes in.

Please make sure that all clothing is named as searching for lost items is very time consuming and the repeated replacement of uniform can be expensive for parents.

School is not a suitable place to wear excesses in jewellery. It can be a distraction to learning and also poses a Health and Safety risk. Therefore all schools in Exeter have agreed a common policy. Only one pair of small earrings and a watch is allowed. We ask for parents support in this.

Curriculum

The quality of life and learning at our school is all important and we endeavour to provide a curriculum that extends beyond the one contained in the National Curriculum. It is a combination of the broad and balanced range of subject areas which make up the National Curriculum and the personal, moral and social skills and attitudes which enable children to mature into well educated adults. The school follows the NC and uses the curriculum guidelines contained in the literacy and numeracy strategies and in the documents produced by the Qualification and Curriculum Authority as a basis for planning.

The children are taught through a blend of class teaching, semi- specialist teaching, in small groups or individually as appropriate to the task involved. The curriculum is delivered using single subject lessons and topic based work. In addition a few weeks during each school year are focused on particular areas of curriculum and community education when parents are invited to join in and experience the curriculum with children.
