EDUCATION AND VALUES

Our Education and Values

We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences help our children to lead happy and rewarding lives. At our school we provide a rich and varied learning environment that allows children to develop their skills and abilities to their full potential.

Through our teaching we aim to:
Enable children to become confident, resourceful, enquiring and independent learners, whilst developing their self respect and encouraging them to respect the ideas, attitudes, values and feelings of others.

Our curriculum is well balanced and reflects the needs of a young child. The education is of quality, carefully structured and systematic, and includes time for individual ideas and solutions which ensure the children’s growth.

This balance of work and activities enables the best qualities of all the children to flourish in a happy and creative environment.

At Winbury we encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In so doing, we help develop their sense of self worth.

Class teachers are the main source of pastoral care and act a s strong role models. Each teacher knows all the children and thus a warm, secure and confident community atmosphere is established.

We place an emphasis on active learning by including the children in discussions, investigations and problem-solving activities.

Whilst retaining its Christian values, Winbury is open to families of all faiths and religions. The children develop a sense of identity and belonging in the school community and sensitivity to others whose faiths and beliefs are different.

EARLY YEARS

  Nursery

The Early Years at Winbury include Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception which is a transition class between the Early Years and Key Stage 1.

Children may join Winbury Nursery Class at any time during the school year, part of full time, upon reaching 2.5 years of age.

The Kindergarten Class is in the modern Orchard Wing of the Main School and has its own interesting and stimulating outdoor discovery area to promote the imagination of the children as they develop their skills and relationships.

Our aim in these three classes is to provide a safe and colourful environment where the children can develop in confidence and independence and gain valuable social skills whilst discovering and learning new concepts.  They will also be introduced to the basic skills and experiences in reading, writing and mathematics that will be of benefit to them as they progress through the school.  Activities are planned to include ‘Birth to Three Matters’ and the six areas of learning in the Foundation Stage.

INFANTS AND JUNIORS

During the infant years which include Reception, Year 1 & Year 2, our balanced curriculum and daily routine emphasise the development of skills in literacy and numeracy which include attention to clear and legible handwriting and an understanding of time tables and number bonds.

In the latter part of Reception emphasis is placed on developing the curriculum towards Key Stage 1.

Importance is also attached to the cultural development of each individual and they are exposed to modern and classical literature and music.  French is taught by a specialist teacher from Kindergarten onwards.

Children commence their junior years at Winbury in Year 3.  Familiar subjects are reinforced and developed further.  By now the work becomes increasingly challenging, and the importance of independent learning is promoted along with the encouragement of high self-esteem, self-confidence and self-discipline.

All of these things ensure our aim for the children to enjoy pride in their achievement and to have a sense of curiosity and enjoyment in learning. They leave us with the skills and confidence to successfully move forward and onward to the next stages of their development and education, well equipped to pursue their strengths and above all to lead happy and fulfilled lives.

SPORT

Sport

The school grounds and adjoining park provide plenty of space for sports and recreation. After-school activities, both inside and out are many and varied and include football, tennis, cricket and netball.

Our annual sports day is greeted with enthusiasm by the children and parents too who enjoy watching proudly the fruits of their children's labours.

All manner of sports and games from the early years foster individual and team skills. All children for the age of 5 are given professional swimming tuition at the local leisure centre pool.

Trophies are received with pride as achievements and successes are rewarded.

DRAMA AND MUSIC

Drama and Music

There is a strong tradition of music and drama at Winbury and we are often to be found winning prizes at local festivals.

All children learn to sing and develop a sense of rhythm by playing percussion instruments.  From age 5 they have the opportunity to learn to read music and to play the recorder and compose their own little pieces.

Children love to act and there is weekly opportunity for them to express themselves through the creative arts of speech and drama.

Theatre outings are organised to expose the children to professional performances and travelling groups are invited to school on a regular basis
