OUR SCHOOL

Winnersh Primary is a Community School for children between the ages of 5 and 11 years. The School’s capacity is 350 and our Standard Number is 50. It is controlled by the Wokingham District Council from whom information may be obtained at: Education and Cultural Services Department, P.O. Box 156, Shute End, Wokingham, RG40 1WN. Telephone number 01189 746000.

The school opened in January 1971 as a one-form entry Primary school to satisfy the needs of the village north of the A329. Winnersh Primary School started with just over one hundred children in a partially completed building. The number of children attending the school has steadily increased as the village of Winnersh itself has grown.

In 2002 the school logo was changed to project the modern image of the school and celebrate the contribution made by Mr Cowley during his 31 years at the school. The design uses the three ‘primary’ colours and the two ‘O’s represent the ‘Outstanding Ethos’ (Ofsted) and the ‘Opportunity’ the school gives to the children. The design also incorporates the letters ‘P’ (Primary) and ‘S’ (School) along with elements that represent Mr Cowley’s achievements at the school.’

Welcome to the Reception Class!

We would like to welcome all of the new children to our class this term. We hope that the children will enjoy their time in Reception and the various learning experiences offered to them.

Our class teacher is Miss Devereaux. We are also very lucky to have an extra special member of our class - Olivia the class bear. Olivia gets to work with those children trying hard and she enjoys dressing up in different outfits. Olivia also likes going on holidays and we enjoy looking at her photographs and learning about where she has been.

We hope you enjoy looking at our class pages and the exciting things we have done and been learning about.

We have P.E on Mondays and Library on Wednesdays.

*****THIS HALF TERM*****

This half term we will be very busy taking part in many play based activities and looking at the topic of 'Journeys'. We will be using a number of resources to discuss and investigate various modes of transport.

Welcome to Year 1. We are really pleased to have our new class to work with this year. Mrs Evans teaches every day apart from Tuesday, when Mrs Virgo comes in. Mrs Povey also works with us in year 1.

Scroll down to see our class Golden Rules and to see exactly what we shall be up to the rest of this Autumn Term:

In Science we will be finding out about ourselves and their properties and light and dark.

In History we shall look at toys in the past and comparing them with the toys we play with today.

In Geography we will be learning about our school environment.

In Art we are exploring self portraits.

In D.T we will be making playground equipment.

Our focus for R.E will be to look at different places of worship.

In P.E we will be developing various skills for sports day as well as dance and games.

In Music we shall be learning new songs and investigating the rhythm in music.

In I.C.T we will begin to make simple pictograms that link with our other class work.

Don't forget to check out our gallery where you can see some of the work we have been doing as well as looking at the links to interesting websites that have been added this term..

Our class have a set of Golden Rules which we try really hard to keep. If Mrs Evans spots us behaving really sensibly, we may become a 'Super.
These are our Golden Rules:

-To be kind, polite and helpful
-To be sensible, not silly
-To share with others
-To keep our class tidy
-To listen carefully
-To put our hand up
-To sit nicely
and
-To always try our best

Remember our P.E days are Tuesday and Friday and our Library day and Show and tell are on Thursday.

We have returned from our Christmas break still in the grip of winter and a reflection of this can be seen in our “Winter Trees” display in the “Gallery.” This display shows the bare trees silhouetted against the grey-blue sky.
This term is a rather short one and as we have a lot to do and learn, it is going to be a very busy term.

In Science we are going to be finding out about movements and the forces of push and pull. We will consider the wind as a force and play with bubbles, ribbon streamers and carrier bag kites to experience this first hand. We will also experience the upward (push) force of water by playing in the water trough and pushing floating objects down and watching what happens. We will write about this and our observations can be found in the “Documents” section on this page.
Later in the term we will be finding out about growing plants and we will each keep a “Plant Diary” in which we will record the progress of growth of our own plant. By the end of the term we hope to have a classroom full of healthy, beautiful plants to photograph and show in our “Gallery.”

Our History lessons will involve investigating how houses and homes have changed over time and to compare and contrast the life of a Victorian family with that of our own.

Our own lives and where we live will be the focus of learning in our Geography lessons. We will learn about the different sorts of homes that people live in, pinpoint landmarks in the neighbourhood and discuss changes in the locality. We will have fun using our address to find our home on a map of Winnersh and learn how to represent and describe our journey from home to school. We will be developing a display about houses which can be seen in our “Gallery.”

We will investigate colour mixing techniques in our Art lessons, gaining a deeper awareness of colour and its effects. Our Homes display will show a collage of warm and cool colours which we will mix and paint in various shades. We will also be copying landscapes painted by well known artists. Sculptures are also going to be made using pipe cleaners and clay. Look out for examples of our creative efforts in the “Gallery” later in the term.

In D.T. we shall become architects as we design and make our own buildings.

“Caring for others” will be the focus of our R.E. lessons and we will reflect on the advice, “treat others as you would like to be treated.” We will also be thinking about how and why various religious groups believe “caring” to be very important.

In P.E. we will be developing various skills to enable us to play games. We shall be using bean bags, quoits and balls to practise throwing and catching, rolling and bouncing.

Our Music lessons will be a time to explore beat and rhythm.

In I.C.T. we shall focus on how technologies can be used to record and share information and we will be thinking about how we can use these technologies to label and classify. We will continue to use I.C.T. in all our other subjects too.

Welcome to Year 3

Welcome back to a new and exciting school year, one in which there will be lots of fun as well as lots of hard work! I do hope that you are going to enjoy your time in year 3. At first it will seem really different to the infants, but as you get used to it you will feel really confident and grown up.
In Year 3 it is a good idea to have your own pencil case, named, and it is also a fantastic idea to have your own set of pencils and felt-tip pens for all that special work we will be doing.
So what kind of things will we be looking at and studying this term? Well, in Science we will be looking at materials and their uses' in the first half term and 'Rocks and Soil' in the second half term. So remember to collect different samples of rock from your garden and from your visit to the seaside.
In History you will enjoy learning all about the Romans, and because this is just SO much to learn you will be studying them right into next term as well. You will be learning about being a Roman legionary, how the Romans built their roads and how they lived. There is just so much to learn about the Romans and never enough time!
Geography should be quite interesting because you will be studying towns and villages, and in R.E. we shall be looking at Christian Festivals, food for special occasions and Winter Festivals.
Art is always one of our favourite subjects in Year 3. This term we will be looking at making some Roman mosaic patterns, as well as exploring different kinds of patterns. You will also be learning how to draw and paint just like a proper artist and make sculptures. So I do hope that you like Art too?
Another favourite subject in year 3 is D.T. We like to design and make models. So, we will be designing and making a Roman house and a musical instrument to play. In addition to this we will also be looking at different kinds of packaging.
In music we will be looking at composing our own tunes, as well as listening to the work of different composers.
All of you will really enjoy P.E. because we will be learning how to play Football, Hockey and Netball, and in Gym you will be making your own sequences, which you will be performing to the rest of the class. Please make sure that you have a proper P.E. kit fully labelled and a pair of football boots for that muddy time when we need them! Our games lesson is on Friday and Gym is on Wednesday.
In ICT you will be using the internet to explore the Romans and you will be doing lots of word processing, so why not practice at home on your own computer?
In PSHE we will be looking at ourselves, so that we all get to know each other really well.
Finally, in Maths you will be looking at adding and subtracting bigger numbers, working out problems and identifying shapes and their properties. In English you will be looking at story settings, poetry, punctuation and fables. Also you will be learning to check your work on completion amongst other things, so that you become a 'writer'. Spelling and Maths homework will be given out on a Friday, and you will have a whole week to do it! So make sure that you bring it in on the following Friday.
Hopefully the World of Maths will be coming into school sometime this term so that you will get the opportunity to play different Maths games and be able to challenge yourself. Also you will have your Christmas Production to look forward to after half term.
I do hope that you will enjoy doing all of this work, and will make Year 3 your best year ever!

Mr Guthrie's Page

Welcome to our class, our teacher is Mr Guthrie and our LSA's are Mrs Orford and Mrs Rorrison.

In year 5 the topic for this term is 'World War II'. We will be studying how the war affected children and will be focussing on The Blitz, evacuation and rationing. We will be visiting the REME Museum in Arborfield on the 14th June and the Imperial War Museum in London on the 10th July. Please contact us at school if you have any connection or information you think will be of use to us as we study this fascinating subject. We are particularly looking for grandparents or friends who wouldn't mind coming in to talk about their wartime experiences.

In Literacy we will be looking at novels, stories and poems from a variety of cultures, choral and performance poetry and persuasive writing.

In Science the children will be encouraged to plan and carry out their own investigations, considering the variables involved and their effect in the outcome of a test. Our topics this term are keeping healthy and life cycles.

In R.E. we will be looking at Sikhism.

In Music we will be concentrating on music from the 40's, composing own piece of music and performance.

In Art we will be sketching, painting, printing and looking at still life.

In D.T. we will be designing and making a musical instrument.

In Games we have been playing cricket and rounders. In P.E. we have been playing indoor games.

The Year 5's, end of Key Stage 2, SATs dates are 14th - 18th May 2007. Please note this date for your future reference.

A visit to the local library would be beneficial to borrow books that the children can use for research.

The children will be given homework on a regular basis. This should take no longer than 45 minutes each night, including time spent on reading, spellings and tables.

Children will also have Maths and English homework each week with regular testing of spellings and tables. Each pupil has a homework diary in which the date, set task and date when the homework is due is written. Could we ask all parents to check this every night and having looked at your child's finished homework, sign to say that it is completed to a standard with which they are happy?

Mr Howell's Page

Welcome to our Year 6 class, our teacher is Mr Howell and our LSA is Mrs Bennett. We also have Mr Waterhouse helping us with our work.

We hope the children have an enjoyable and successful time in Year 6. We have high expectations of them in all areas and hope that they will set good examples for children lower down the school.

This term's topic is the Victorians. To further the children's understanding of life during the mid-1800's they will be visiting the Victorian School Room in the museum in Reading Town Hall.

The children will have practice SAT's after Christmas with the actual SAT's in May next year. There will be an information meeting on Wednesday 7th November to introduce the end of key stage tests (SAT's.)

We encourage children to eat and drink healthily and suggest that they bring a fruit or vegetable if they want a snack at break time. Water is always available

It is important that child read every night and record those books they have read. We are again providing a green reading record book for this purpose in which you may record your thoughts about your child's reading and which will be monitored by the class teacher.

Please continue to check homework diaries every night and having examined your child's work, sign to say that it has been completed to a standard with which you are satisfied.

Could we remind you to make sure all uniform, including PE kit, is named and that PE kit is brought into school on the correct days. Plain black, navy or white shorts and a plain white or school yellow T-shirt must be worn for PE lessons. Football boots are essential for both boys and girls for activities on the field, as it can get very muddy during the winter months.

As a reminder, the only jewellery that can be worn in school are stud earrings and a watch. All earrings must be removed for PE or taped using something brought from home. Nail varnish is not permitted in school.

We have Games on a Tuesday and P.E on a Friday so don't forget to bring your kit!

Mr Howell's - Joke of the day -
Two fleas were coming out of the movies and it was raining very hard.
One flea says to the other, "What are we going to do? Should we walk or wait for the next dog that passes by?"

Please be sure to bring into school each day all the equipment you will need, and be sure that all items of clothing are named. Bring P.E. kit,(don't forget trainers!) to school on Mondays and leave it here till Friday. It's a good idea to get your bag ready the night before, so that you don't have to panic in the morning.

This term we shall be studying the Victorians, so if you have any old artefacts in your family or books on the subject, please bring them in to school. Later this term we shall be visiting the Katesgrove Victorian classroom at Reading museum and taking a walk around the town to look at some particular Victorian buildings and landmarks.

Don't forget, if you are unsure about anything or have a problem, just ask a teacher or helper.

Have a good term!
