Winterfold House School

Winterfold House School is centred around a spacious Georgian house set in nearly 40 acres of attractive grounds, surrounded by traditional English countryside of gently rolling farmland and pasture. This is the setting for our playing fields, pitches, woods and gardens. Beyond, there is a particularly fine view of Worcestershire across a landscape of small valleys, hills, copses and farmhouses to the Malvern Hills in the distance.

The School was founded in Birmingham in 1928, moving to Herefordshire in the war years, before finally settling at Winterfold House in 1946. For half a century it was a very successful boys' boarding school, but it has developed to meet new demands and new challenges and has emerged as a leading day school, taking boys and girls from 2 to 13 with a Day Nursery for babies from 6 weeks. In 1997 it became a Charitable Trust, controlled by its own Board of Governors.

Winterfold is a Roman Catholic school, and the parish priest at nearby St Mary's, Harvington serves as our School Chaplain. Children from other denominations have always been warmly welcomed at Winterfold and there is a strong ecumenical tradition which we have always felt to be of considerable benefit to all our children. We place a great emphasis on educating the whole child and aim to produce well rounded, confident boys and girls with high moral standards and respect for others.

Headmaster's introduction

t the heart of Winterfold's ethos lies a very genuine concern for the happiness and success of every child entrusted into our care. Winterfold is almost unique in its history as a family run school and my wife, Linda, and I aim to maintain its intrinsic family values.

Together with our own children, James and Katie, we look upon the school as our family and our home. We pride ourselves that whilst being large enough to be able to offer excellent and constantly improving facilities, we are small enough to ensure that we know each of our pupils individually and this produces the secure and trusting environment which is vital for a child's development.

At Winterfold we believe in the importance of the individual, and aim to develop the whole child. We place great emphasis upon discovering and nurturing the special talents of each pupil. Thus we provide a comprehensive range of opportunities which allows every boy and girl to find some area in which he or she will shine. Success in any endeavour raises confidence and self-esteem and this in turn leads to success in other areas, not least academic.

We aim to provide outstanding education at all levels so that every child's academic potential is achieved. The staffare highly dedicated and well qualified and we operate a policy of continuing professional development which ensure that all teachers are abreast of current methods and techniques. Winterfold has an excellent record of success in entrance exams and scholarships to senior schools.

Underpinning all that we do is the Catholic ethos of the school which emphasises the value and sanctity of the individual and the importance of the community above self. This ensures that we produce young people who have a strong sense of right and wrong and the courage to follow their convictions.

Education is a partnership between school and parents and communication is vital if this partnership is to work. We hold regular parent's evenings, and you will receive frequent reports. You, as well as your child, are member of the Winterfold family and we encourage our parents to see the staff and myself as trusted friends, and thus you are very welcome to drop in any time for a chat.

This web site can only give a very general and fleeting impression, and cannot convey the happy, relaxed yet purposeful atmosphere which characterises the school. To experience this you need to visit us. I look forward to meeting you, to showing you round the school and to introducing you to the staff and children so that you feel at first hand the unique family atmosphere that is Winterfold and can discover for yourselves just why I am so proud to be its Headmaster.

Admissions and registration

Children can be accepted at any age, provided we have a place available.

There is no formal entry requirement, although we do need to be sure that your child will benefit from a Winterfold education. Children usually come for a day before they are due to start; in that way we can assess their strengths and weaknesses, and it enables your child to meet the other children and staff and gives them a helpful understanding of the way the school works.

Talented children are encouraged to sit Winterfold Scholarships for entry into Year 7. Academic, Sport, Music, Art and All-Rounder Scholarships are available and tests take place in late February. Awards of up to 50% from fees can be made. Details are available from the School Office.
