SCHOOL ORGANISATION

The Governing Body recognises the importance of class size with a mixed ability and age range within a small school.  The school currently has four classes, each with fewer than 25 children.  Class 4 has two very experienced teachers who job share, and a part time teaching assistant, while the other three classes each have a full time teacher and a full time teaching assistant.

Class Age Year Group Key Stage
1 4+ Early Years Foundation
2 5+ Year 1 1
6+ Year 2
3 7+ Year 3 2
8+ Year 4
4 9+ Year 5
10+ Year 6

Admission arrangements

Children are admitted to school during the academic year (1st September - 31st August) in which they attain their fifth birthday.

The School follows the County Guidelines for the admission of pupils. Priority is given to:

bullet

Children living in the catchment area of the school.

bullet

Siblings of children already attending the school, but who live outside the catchment area.

bullet

Children who live outside the catchment area, providing there are vacancies.

At Woodham Walter C of E (V C) Primary School, disabled pupils are admitted according to the guidelines for the admittance of any other pupil.  The school follows the Local Education Authority (LEA)/Governing Body Admissions Policy, which will not allow sex, race, colour, religion, or disability to be used as criteria for admission.

In accordance with The Disability Discrimination Act 1995, the Governing Body of this school undertakes its statutory duty to meet the special needs of any or all of their pupils.

Section 161(4) of The Education Act (concerning the equal opportunities of access to the curriculum and equality of treatment) is dealt with under the School’s Equal Opportunities Policy, a copy of which is available at the office, for those who wish to read it.

A recent accessibility review shows that almost all of the school is accessible to disabled people.  An action plan is being drawn up to ensure that any future building or alterations to the school take account of the needs of the disabled.  Currently all our pupils are able to access all areas of the school.

Prospective parents are always welcome to visit the school.  However, it is suggested that they contact the school office for an appointment with the Headteacher, who will be pleased to show them around and provide further information.

Pre school visits

Children beginning their school career in September are invited to a series of introductory visits during the preceding summer term.  In September they begin with a week of afternoon lessons and build up to full time attendance over a period of four weeks.

CURRICULUM

Work throughout the School is planned with regard to the requirements of study of the National Curriculum, and the wider curriculum, which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of primary age pupils.

Our School curriculum aims are:-

bullet to read fluently and accurately, with understanding, feeling and discrimination
bullet to develop a legible style of handwriting and satisfactory standards of grammar, punctuation and spelling
bullet to communicate clearly and confidently in speech and writing in ways appropriate for various occasions and purposes
bullet to listen attentively, with understanding and respect for the views of others
bullet to acquire information from various sources and to record information and findings in various ways, including the use of information and communication technology
bullet to understand how mathematical ideas learnt in the classroom can be used in real life situations within the wider environment
bullet to observe living and inanimate things and to recognise characteristics such as pattern and order
bullet to become familiar with certain basic scientific ideas
bullet to investigate solutions and interpret evidence, to analyse and solve problems
bullet to develop awareness of oneself and develop both sensitivity and empathy towards others. To acquire the values of society at large in order to make and hold moral judgements and to develop habits of self-discipline and acceptable behaviour
bullet to be aware of the geographical, historical and social aspects of the local environment and national heritage and to be aware of other times and other places
bullet to acquire the skills to be able to express oneself through the opportunities provided in a broad curriculum encompassing music, dance, drama, art and craft
bullet to develop agility and physical co-ordination, confidence in physical activity and the ability to express feeling through movement

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

We recognise special needs at both ends of the spectrum; those children who experience a range of difficulties and those who need an extension programme above the level normally addressed by their peers.  The delivery of the curriculum in each class is designed to be effective for all the children and it is only occasionally that a child can be helped more effectively by withdrawal from the classroom.

Children are monitored throughout their time at Woodham Walter.  If there is a cause for concern, parents are invited to discuss the needs of the child with the class teacher, and, if appropriate, the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO).  In the first instance, it is likely that additional help will be given within the classroom and the child’s progress will be monitored. If there is continued cause for concern we will follow the procedures laid out in the policy document – always in consultation with the parents.
