Welcome !!!
Woore Primary School is a small school in the north east of the county of Shropshire, close to the borders of Staffordshire and Cheshire. The school is in the centre of the village of Woore and was built in 1983, replacing the Victorian school. We enjoy close links with the local community, hosting many village events including the annual Woore Village Fete. The school is a happy and secure place where there is an emphasis on high standards within a caring and sensitive ethos. We value all children and their families as members of our school community. We have close links with Woore Playgroup, organising joint fund-raising events as well as sharing work and expertise. We are developing new ways of strengthening these links. We also have a close working relationship with The Grove School in Market Drayton to which a high proportion of our Year 6 pupils transfer at age 11.
The school has three classrooms, which have shared cloakroom facilities. We have a well-appointed hall, which we use for P.E., Music, assemblies and lunchtime. Within a shared area, we have facilities for art and technology and are developing a reference library with the help of the Friends of Woore School. We enjoy beautiful grounds facing across Shropshire farmland. We have a hard area for netball and tennis, as well as two grassed areas for football, rugby, athletics, cricket and rounders. We have a wild area providing a valuable resource for environmental education. Each classroom is fully equipped with PC’s and other essentials such as reading books, dictionaries and other equipment relevant to the stage of development of the children.
We hope that this web provides you with initial information about our school. We would encourage you to come to school and see the school working. If you would like to telephone to make arrangements to visit, please ring to speak to Mr M Wale, the Headteacher who will be pleased to answer any queries you have and to arrange a mutually convenient time for your visit.

| At Woore we believe that the curriculum encompasses all the work in school. We
aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all our children and meet their
individual needs. We provide equal opportunities to all pupils irrespective of race,
gender or ability.
There are Policy Statements, which show how we teach each of the areas of the
curriculum as follows:
National Curriculum Core Subjects
English
Since the introduction of the National Literacy Strategy the school has
developed a comprehensive approach to the teaching of a daily hour of
Literacy in each class. Resources are carefully matched to meet the needs of
the children and enable the staff to deliver an exciting and stimulating
programme of language teaching. Support assistants work alongside
teachers to improve the quality of learning in this vital area.
Mathematics
The National Numeracy framework was introduced in September 1999.
Children benefit from a daily-dedicated mathematics lesson to give them a
solid foundation in number work and learn about shape, space and measures
in practical contexts. Data handling becomes more complex as they move
through the school. There is a high emphasis on daily mental calculations and
learning of number bonds.
Science
Our annual science programme is based on the QCA scheme of work.
Themes covering the aspects of Life and Living Processes, Earth in Space,
Physical Processes and Materials, form the core of our investigations. |
| We aim to provide a wide variety of sport and games. At the appropriate
times of the year, we play football, netball, cricket, rounders, hockey, and
tennis. For the younger children we develop appropriate skills through
traditional games as well as more modern alternatives. We hold regular
games afternoons for class three pupils in conjunction with the other local
small schools.
We use the facilities at Market Drayton Pool to enable all the children to
develop skills in swimming using the Kellogs Award Scheme.
We offer a range of sporting activities through after school clubs including
Rounders, Cricket, Football, and Athletics. |

| Your child's happiness at school is of paramount importance to us. It is
essential for us to develop a partnership with you from the start by creating
and sharing your child's development. The earliest learning has taken place
within your home and with your support. We are here to build upon a process,
which has already begun.
In order to initiate this partnership, Mrs Ward who teaches Class 1 will
arrange a home visit in the term before your child begins full time education.
These visits give all who are involved a chance to ask questions and to get to
know one another in comfortable and secure surroundings. All children are
different, some will settle more easily and quickly than others. Mrs Ward is
happy to discuss any anxieties or concerns. At the same stage before
starting part-time visits, you will be given a 'Starting School' information pack
to prepare your child for a happy, enjoyable and successful school career. In
addition there is a work booklet entitled "What I can do" which will give us an
indication of a child's capabilities before starting school. |
| We organise learning in these subject areas, which relate to the stage of
development of your child, making learning meaningful and appropriate. In order to
do this, children of a similar age may be set slightly different tasks, have different
levels of support and different outcomes even though they are working on the same
theme.
The children are divided into Years depending on age.
Year R 4.8 - 5 years ) Infants
Year 1 5 - 6 years )
Year 2 6 - 7 years )
Year 3 7 - 8 years ) Lower Juniors
Year 4 8 - 9 years )
Year 5 9 - 10 years ) Upper Juniors
Year 6 10 - 11 years )
The work in the National Curriculum subjects, Religious Education and Personal and
Social Education is planned by the class teacher from planning cycles that the school
has developed.
Most of this work will be taught as separate subjects while some will be planned
around a central theme where subjects will be linked together enabling children to
make links across the subject boundaries. In order to ensure a broad and balanced
provision the teacher will ensure that all subjects are taught for the required time over
the three terms of the year.
We believe that children learn in a variety of ways, but that the most effective
learning is active, exploratory and focused rather than passive. Children can be seen
working as individuals, in small and large groups depending on the activity and the
learning, which is taking place. |

Our cook, Mrs. Underwood, provides excellent school meals, which are
extremely nourishing and attractively presented. There is always a choice,
with vegetarian alternatives. The cost of the meals is £1.45p.
Milk can be
provided at morning break at a cost of 11p per day. This should be ordered
from Mrs. Underwood. Some children qualify for free school meals. If you
think you child is eligible please contact the school secretary.
Children may prefer to bring a packed lunch to school. We all eat together in
the hall.
The children are served and supervised by Mrs. Underwood with the help of
Mrs. D. Sutton, the assistant cook, and the midday assistants. |
