At College we pride ourselves on helping all students to achieve their potential. The Extension Programme will interest you if you have gained several A or A* grades at GCSE and are likely to achieve A or B grades at A Level. It is made up of both subject extension and skills extension. Subject Extension will take place within your lessons, through the materials you use and the tasks that are set, and also through extra-curricular activities such as lecture visits. Several subjects will also offer you the opportunity to attend an extra lesson per week to study material that is beyond your AS or A Level syllabus. You may be able to work towards an Advanced Extension Award, additional AS or other qualification.

The skills element is aimed at those with five A or A* grades at GCSE. This is a cross subject weekly session which develops skills by means of debate and group work on a range of social issues and prepares you for an AS qualification in Critical Thinking. Those who opt for Critical Thinking Extra, which is for two lessons per week in total, enjoy specific careers management sessions as well as Critical Thinking and can also gain an AS in General Studies. There is only a limited amount of homework and no coursework as part of the course.

For students with a specific career in mind, your extension work may be part of the College’s suite of Professional Programmes

Professional Programmes at the College are an exciting opportunity to take part in specialised career development which is additional to your AS studies and that will help you to prepare for specific HE/FE courses and careers. Each programme will be followed for between one and three lessons per week, depending upon your requirements and we will tailor the programme to meet your needs. For 2008, Professional Programmes will be offered for entry in to the following professions:

• Medical - doctors, dentists, veterinary scientists, physiotherapists and related professions
• Legal - eg solicitors, barristers
• Business, finance, marketing, accounting
• Education - teaching and related professions
• Art, design and architecture
• Film, media and journalism

All students who follow a Professional Programme will benefit from specific careers management guidance, a programme of visiting speakers and the opportunity to gain first hand experience of a specific career area through visits and work experience placements. Where appropriate, you will be helped to prepare for Higher Education courses and a variety of additional tests that are used to select between able candidates in these increasingly competitive fields eg the Bio-Medical Admissions Test (BMAT). You will have the opportunity to opt into extras eg Ethics, Critical Thinking, and Young Enterprise.
