Mission Statement for Wyvern.
through the provision of a safe and nurturing, yet stimulating and challenging environment, within a framework of high expectation, equal opportunity and team commitment, which recognises and welcomes effective partnership with parents and values increasing inclusion.
The Characteristics of the School.
Wyvern provides specialist education for up to 79 pupils aged 2 - 19 years with SLD, PMLD and complex learning difficulties, including Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
The majority of pupils admitted to Wyvern have substantial global developmental delay, emergent communication skills and are highly dependent. Some may have additional disabilities such as cerebral palsy, sensory impairment, autism and/or complex needs including challenging behaviour.
Pupils are educated within a framework of high expectation which facilitates and celebrates achievement, and which values partnership with parents.
The school has a positive ethos which has its foundation in mutual respect, collaborative decision making and effective teamwork.
Since the last inspection pupils with PMLD have been integrated into the mainstream of the school; provision has been established for pupils with ASD; and students aged 16+ have a specialist on site unit.
The school currently has six classes in which pupils are grouped according to age (wherever possible by key stage), and separate autistic provision. Supported by strategies such as TEACCH and PECs, pupils with ASD are enabled to join their peers for specific sessions throughout the week.
The provision of additional 1:1 assistance for pupils with PMLD and ASD is reflective of the LEA's support of these initiatives.
As clearly articulated within the last Ofsted report, the school building is far too small to facilitate effective curriculum delivery (specialist areas) in the full range of subjects. Current provision includes a multi-purpose hall, hydrotherapy pool, food technology room and small interactive sensory room. The refurbishment of a classroom vacated by 16+ students has provided Wyvern with a library and therapy area for the first time.
The school and LEA are currently in consultation regarding the possibility of new premises for Wyvern.
Successful curricular links (including residential visits) involving Wyvern School and Wey Valley School (mainstream secondary) are key features of our provision at key stages 3 and 4.
Similarly, effective links have been established between our 16+ provision and Weymouth College and between our class 1 and a local play-group.
The governors and staff have been particularly concerned at the lack of specialist respite care to support pupils with Autism and complex needs. A significant outcome of this has resulted in the movement of a small number of pupils otherwise appropriately placed at Wyvern into residential provision.
Early years referrals to Wyvern are increasing. |
