I would like to welcome you and your child to our school. I hope that this will be the beginning of a happy and fruitful relationship.

I enclose information which will provide you with an outline of our educational philosophy and school organisation and hope that you will find it helpful.

We believe that education must take place within a happy, caring, supportive environment and we will do our utmost to provide this for your child.

Please remember that we are available to answer your questions, to address your concerns and to relieve any anxieties which you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact us should any of these arise in order that we can do our utmost to help

Our Aims:

We aim to create a happy school environment in which your child

is encouraged to become an active, caring and contributing member

of our school community.

We hope that we can work together, school and parents

in order to achieve these aims.

• The ethos of the school is all important and it is our aim to provide a safe, caring and happy environment in which all can mature.
• We view education as a requiring positive, contributing and co-operative team work and we welcome the involvement of parents / carers, Governors and others in the community in this process.
• We hope that all members of the school community will work towards the same goal.
• We are proud of our school and will make every effort to achieve our stated aims. We hope that children and their parents / carers will develop a similar pride in our school.

Educating the child in the broadest sense is the purpose of our school. To achieve this we believe that education should be planned according to certain general principles:

• The sense of value and importance of each individual will be developed and maintained by :

  • Recognising that pupils have a variety of special educational needs which must be catered for in ways which make the curriculum accessible to all pupils;
  • Fostering sympathetic awareness and understanding of the cultural diversity of society.
  • Empowering pupils to participate in their communities as active citizens who take responsibility for themselves and each other;

• Each individual has a contribution to make towards the enrichment of the school community.

• The education provided by the school will be concerned with developing personal and social values in addition to the development of skills and competence and the acquisition of knowledge.

• Experiences during the 'Early Years' of education have a great influence on the development of the child. Due and appropriate care and attention will be paid to ensure that the needs of children are met during this important stage in their development.

• The knowledge, skill and understanding which is embodied in the formal description of the National Curriculum will be developed in such a way that all pupils are encouraged to achieve the highest standards of which they are capable.

• The education provided within the school should be meaningful and relevant to experiences within the community and should assist in the preparation of pupils for secondary school and adult life.

• It is recognised that, at Ysgol y Castell, the Welsh language and Welsh culture are of significance and that this significance is reflected in all aspects of school life.

• It is of vital importance that the needs and aspirations of all members of the school community, pupils, parents / carers, staff and Governors are taken into consideration and that all members of that community work together in order to develop a caring, supportive and understanding ethos which reflects the aims outlined in this document.

Co-operation between home and school.

As parents / carers are the most important adults in a child's life, we encourage a partnership

and close contact between you and the staff of Ysgol y Castell.

• Day to day matters requiring only a few words may be discussed at the beginning or end of the school day. However, if there is a matter of particular concern which requires more detailed discussion, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with a member of staff.

• It is very important for us to be aware of any circumstances which may be affecting your child's happiness, behaviour or progress, just as it is for you to be informed of your child's activities at school.

• 'Open Evenings' are arranged at regular intervals during the course of the school year. These are usually held in September, February and July and will give you and your child's teacher an opportunity to discuss your child's progress.

• Written reports on the progress of your child are provided twice during the course of the school year, currently in February and July, preceding our Open Evenings

• You will be informed of developments at Ysgol y Castell by means of regular newsletters which will be given to your child. These often contain essential information, dates of events etc. Please check your child's bag for any letter which he / she may have brought home. School news and newsletters can also be found on our website /www.sirddinbych.gov.uk / /www.denbighshire.gov.uk of which we are very proud.

• At the ages of 6 (End of Key Stage 1) and 11 (End of Key Stage 2) your child's level of attainment will be assessed in common with all children in Wales. The results will be reported to you.

• Our educational programme is planned for the entire school year and we feel that it is important for all children who are in good health to attend school at all times. You will have seen from national publicity that parents are asked, for the benefit of your child's education, where possible to plan your holidays to coincide with school holidays, a list of which is enclosed.

Home School Agreements.

A home school agreement is a statement which explains and sets out:

• the school's aims and values;
• the school's responsibility to pupils;
• the responsibility of parents;
• what the school expects of its pupils.

Parent Helpers.

• We have been fortunate in the parental support which we receive. We are grateful for this.
• We welcome the help of parents / carers in the classroom under the guidance and supervision of the class teacher.
• If you are able to offer assistance please discuss the matter with any member of staff, we will be pleased to meet you.
• Staff and helpers are all subject to 'checks' with the Criminal Records Bureau.

Clothing:

• The Governing Body of Ysgol y Castell expects children to wear school uniform.

• School colours are red, black, grey and white and in summer, girls can wear red and white gingham dresses, 'pedal pushers' or shorts.

• School sweatshirts, T-shirts and ties are available from the school office.

• It is essential that all items of clothing are clearly marked with your child's name.

• In the interests of health and safety we request that children wear 'sensible' shoes. Any form of high heel or platform sole can lead to accidents.

• We request that jewellery is not worn as rings, chains and dangling or hoop ear rings can lead to injury to your child or to others. Stud ear rings only please.

• You will be advised of the days on which your child's class has physical education. Details of the clothing required for P.E. is given at the end of this brochure. Please make sure that each item of clothing is labelled with your child's name. We regularly find many items of 'lost property' and cannot identify the owners because they are not labelled.

Meals:

• We are proud of the service offered by our school cook Mrs. Carol Saunders and her kitchen staff.
• All children remaining at school during the lunch period are expected to show courtesy and respect for the supervisory staff and regard for their wishes.
• Supervisory staff are valued and valuable colleagues and children are expected to address them by their correct titles Mrs........., Miss ............., Mr..........

• Children are offered a 'set' meal at a fixed price. Dinners should preferably be paid for on Monday mornings, for the week.
• Money should be placed in an envelope (a used envelope is fine), clearly marked with your child's name and class
• Parents / Carers wishing to enquire about entitlement to free school meals should contact the school.
• Children providing their own food should bring their lunch in suitable containers, labelled with their names.

Admission:

• Children are admitted to the Early Years Unit (Full time Reception class) of Ysgol y Castell during the educational year (September 1st. to August 31st.) in which they celebrate their fifth birthday and to the Early Years Unit (Part time Nursery class) of Ysgol y Castell during the educational year (September 1st. to August 31st.) in which they celebrate their fourth birthday

• The admission policy of the school states: 'The Governing Body of Ysgol y Castell is committed to admit to the school children from within the historic catchment area of the school together with the siblings of children already attending the school.

• Parents / Carers who wish to enrol their child / children at Ysgol y Castell are welcome to visit the school by prior arrangement with the Head teacher.

• The parents / carers of children entering the Reception and Nursery classes in September will be invited to visit the school as part of the admission procedure.

• Recent legislation limits class sizes to 30 pupils. This will mean that in some cases and under some circumstances parents cannot be offered a place at the school for which a preference has been expressed.

School Hours:

• Ysgol y Castell is a primary school catering for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 11.

Afternoon Session ... 1:00 to 3:15

• Our Early Years Nursery unit provides part time education for children who are of pre-school age.

• Breaks ...

Key Stage 2 (Juniors) 10:45 to 11:00; 12:00 to 1:00

• 21 hours are spent on teaching during the normal school week at Key Stage 1 (Infants) and 23.5 hours at Key Stage 2 (Juniors) This time is exclusive of acts of collective worship, registration and breaks.

• Members of staff will be on hand to meet your child as from 8:45, this being the time at which the school will be open.

• Please try not to have your child waiting on the playground too early, especially in cold or wet weather.

• It would be appreciated if you would please avoid working areas such as classrooms and activity areas during the course of the working day (8:55 to 3:15). During this period all doors with the exception of the main entrance door are closed for reasons of security. If you have any reason to visit us during the school day please use the main entrance, calling at the school office.

Classes:

• The school caters for the needs of children from the ages of 4 to 11, including part time (Nursery) 5 sessions per week for those children of pre - school age.

• The Early Years (Nursery) currently takes place during the morning (8:55 to 11:30 a.m. daily).

• The local Playgroup, Toddlers and Mother and Toddler groups meet at Ysgol y Castell. Details can be obtained from the school or from the Playgroup secretary. (Name, address and telephone number can be obtained from the school)

• There are currently 182 full time pupils on the roll of the school together with 27 children in our Nursery. (May 2006).

Children are generally taught as 'year' groups, with children of the same school 'year' (1 to 6). It may be necessary to review this arrangement should pupil numbers or financial circumstances so require.

• On leaving Ysgol y Castell at the age of eleven, parents / carers have a right to express a choice about which secondary school their children should attend. The LEA offers provision at Rhyl High School, Blessed Edward Jones School, Rhyl (Roman Catholic denominational school) and Ysgol Glan Clwyd St. Asaph ( for Welsh education - although this is an option only for children who are fluent in Welsh). Traditionally, for about 40 years, a majority of parents have elected to send their children to Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan, Abergele.

• Parents / Carers complete parental preference forms, provided by the LEA, indicating choice of secondary school towards the end of the first term in year 6.

The School Curriculum:

• The school curriculum is governed by the Education Reform Act of 1988 (the National Curriculum).
• We aim to provide a curriculum which is broad, balanced, relevant and appropriate to the needs of each child.

• To this end, pupils are taught using a variety of methods. Class teaching remains an important feature, with, where appropriate, group and individual teaching being used for the benefit of each child. We aim to give due attention to the basic skills of literacy and numeracy within a broad and balanced curriculum.

• The curriculum is in accordance with the policies of the Local Education Authority and the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum forms the basis of teaching and learning.

• Children study Mathematics, English, Science, (the three core subjects of the National Curriculum), Welsh (as a second language), Technology, History, Geography, Art and Craft, Music, Religious Education and Physical Education.

• Pupils in Years 4 and 5 visit the swimming pool at Rhyl Sports Centre to develop their swimming skills.

• At present there is 'specialist' teaching of: gymnastics, dance, games, music, art and technology at Key Stage 2. All teachers teach all other subjects.

Special educational needs.

* Our Special Needs policy states:

'At Ysgol y Castell, we will endeavour to make learning as effective as possible for each child who is a member of our school community. This will entail the provision of appropriate (differentiated) educational experiences for all children, initially with particular emphasis on English language and mathematics. Children who, for any reason, continue to experience difficulty in learning may require additional support in order to progress. The aim of any such provision will be to enable the child to overcome his or her problem. Wherever possible, this provision will be made available within the school community but it is recognised that suitable resources and services may not always be available.

The active co-operation of all parents / carers is vital in the education of all children but especially so in the case of children with special educational needs. If effective provision is to be made for children with special educational needs then it is essential that we as a school, together with external agencies including the LEA, health service, social services, etc. work closely with each other and with the parent/s / carer/s of the child. Parent/s / carer/s will be fully informed of their own and their child's entitlement as outlined in the Code of Practice, and they will be fully involved at all times and at all stages within the educational process.'

• Parents / Carers should express any concerns which they may have about difficulties which their child may be experiencing at school to either the class teacher or Head teacher.

• Additional support can be provided for children who have special educational needs. This may be provided by the class teacher or with the assistance of our Learning Support Teacher.

• Where appropriate Mr. N. Evans (Headteacher and Special Needs Co-ordinator) acts as Learning Support Teacher for three mornings a week, teaching children in small group situations.

Religious Education and Acts of Worship.

• Children receive religious education based on Denbighshire's agreed syllabus. They also take part in daily acts of worship.
• Parents / Carers who wish to withdraw their children from Religious Education or morning acts of worship should inform the Head teacher, in writing, of their wishes.

• Acts of worship are held daily, and last for about 20 minutes. All children meet as a school 'family' twice weekly (usually on Monday and Friday). Key Stages (1 and 2) meet as groups on one morning a week On the remaining two mornings, classes hold their own acts of worship.
• Classes are responsible in turn for conducting acts of worship. You will be notified of your child's class services, and are invited to join us on those occasions.

Sex / Health Education:

Sex education is part of a developing programme of personal and social education.

Our aims are as follows:

• To combat ignorance and increase understanding and knowledge.
• To increase awareness of relationships and emotions.
• To explore and develop attitudes, values and skills.

Such education:

• Encourages responsibility and respect for self and for others.
• Is appropriate to the age and stage of development of pupils.
• Is planned and co-ordinated, not just in response to children's questions or one off talks.
• Is available to all pupils including those with special educational needs.
• Should include areas prescribed by National Curriculum orders.
• Should support and complement education on such matters provided within the home.
• The Young Persons' Health Adviser (formerly school nurse) is invited to support the delivery of the programme of study at Years 5 and 6.Parents / Carers are informed and consulted in advance of the visit.

The programme includes the following:

• Child development after conception is a valid area for study.
• Fertilisation of eggs in animals other than mammals should (when appropriate to the National Curriculum) be discussed within the context of natural sciences.

Key Stage 1. (Reception and years 1 and 2).

• Know that humans develop at different rates and that human babies have special needs.
• Be able to name parts of the body. Understand the concept of male and female.
• Know about personal safety. Begin to develop simple skills and practices which help maintain personal safety.
• Appreciate ways in which people learn to live and work together, listening, discussing, sharing.

• Begin to know about and have some understanding of the physical, emotional and social changes which take place at puberty.
• Know that there are many different patterns of friendships, be able to talk about friends with appropriate adults.
• Understand some of the basic skills necessary for parenting.
  
  • Parents / Carers have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the sex education curriculum other than that prescribed by the National Curriculum.

The Western Play Area.

We are very fortunate to have a unique seating area and adventure playground for use by the children, donated through the generosity of Mr. James and Mrs. Jane Bonser, The Beach Cafe, Pensarn. Classes are timetabled to have use of these areas. The adventure playground meets health and safety regulations and is regularly inspected. Children can only use the adventure playground under supervision of a member of staff and following a request from you as a parent by means of completing a special request form.

Extra Curricular Activities.

During the year a comprehensive programme of extra curricular activity is undertaken at the school and the Governing Body recognises the contribution of staff in supporting these activities. Without this voluntary help these activities could not take place. This includes:

Sport. At Key Stage 2 pupils participate in football, netball, cricket, rounders, athletics and rugby. Inter house and inter school competitions are held.

Cultural. The school encourages pupils to participate in musical and dance activities. A dance group meets after school. A branch of the Urdd (Welsh League of Youth) has been established and members participate in a range of activities.

Homework:

• Homework is set for children in all classes according to the school's homework policy.
  
  • From Reception, children will be asked to practice their reading skills at home with your support.
• Children in classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 may also be asked to learn spelling of groups of words and also mathematical tables.
• We would be pleased if you would work with your child and encourage him / her to complete any tasks which may be set.
• We find that praise and encouragement are the most effective means of motivating most children to learn.
• Parents / Carers should discuss any concerns with regard to homework with staff . This may include the setting of additional work.

The Welfare of Your Child:

• We all share a responsibility for our own health and safety and that of others.

For reasons of security doors are secured at 8:55 a.m. All visitors to school should report to the school office.

• In the interests of safety, cars are not allowed on the school drive or school yard without the prior permission of the Head teacher.

• We recommend that Infant pupils are accompanied by an adult when walking to and from school and that older pupils only walk unaccompanied if you are confident that they are aware of all hazards and act appropriately. Children should not set out for school too early. They should not arrive at school before 8:40 p.m. by which time gates will be shut to traffic.

• Please encourage your child to cross roads safely at recognised crossings and to use available pavements.

• Some children express the wish to cycle to school. Hylas Lane is a very busy road and for your child's safety we would discourage this.

• We ask all who arrive by car to treat Hylas Lane as a one way street, approaching from the 'Castle' end. We would ask you to respect the yellow 'zig zags' and not to stop on these. We would also ask you to park on one side of Hylas Lane only, so allowing access for emergency vehicles should this become necessary.

• Denbighshire operates a No Smoking policy inside and outside all of its premises including Ysgol y Castell.

• Dogs are prohibited from school premises including Ysgol y Castell.

• It is important that you provide us with details of any medical condition from which your child may be suffering.

• The Young Persons' Health Adviser (formerly 'School Nurse) visits the school and is pleased to advise on medical problems if requested.

• Medical examinations are held towards the end of the Reception year and you are invited to attend. If your child is involved in a dental or medical screening programme you will be consulted in advance.

• The North Wales Health Authority recommend that with some illnesses, children are kept away from school for a minimum number of days.

German Measles - 4 days from appearance of rash.

Measles - 7 days from appearance of rash.

Mumps - 9 days from disappearance of swelling.

Please consult your Doctor should you have any concern

• Head Lice present problems in many schools. Children with head lice should not attend school until treated and the problem removed. The school should be informed of any case of head lice. Checking your child's hair every evening will help avoid this problem.

• If you are concerned about any aspect of your child's development you can discuss your concerns with our Young Persons' Health Adviser.

• If we feel concerned about your child as a result of illness or any accident at school , we will contact you.

• You will be contacted in the event of any head injury which is brought to our attention.

Pastoral support for you and your child.

• If for any reason your child may be unhappy at school we hope that you or they will bring any problems to our attention as a matter of urgency. The following members of staff are available to children / parents / carers to discuss matters relating to any such problems.

• We have an Education Social Worker who is available to members of the school community. Mr. Jim Wash can be contacted through the school or at Rhyl High School (01745 343533).

Child Protection.

• All schools have a duty to report any concerns about the welfare of children to the appropriate authorities.The Governing Body is committed to uphold the County Council Child Protection Policy and associated procedures.

Attendance.

• It is required by law that children attend school from the age of 5. It is essential that if your child is absent from school you should inform us either by letter, E-mail (ysgol.ycastell@denbighshire.gov.uk) or telephone (01745 590545) of the reason for his/her absence. If you do not inform us of a reason for absence, this can be viewed as an 'unauthorised absence'. The level of such 'unauthorised absences' has to be recorded. Unauthorised absences are regarded as an indicator of the level of truancy within a school and so reflect badly upon Ysgol y Castell. Our Educational Social Worker may be asked to look into cases of children who are absent without explanation. Last year we were very disappointed to record 476 (0.8%) such absences (for the absence of 38 children), with no explanation received. (September 2005 to June 2006)

Behaviour:

It is hoped that each child will leave Ysgol y Castell having acquired a measure of self discipline, respect and courtesy towards others and towards their property. Our behaviour policy is intended to help them to achieve this. We would ask you to help us in this task.

You will receive a monthly record of your child's classroom and playground behaviour.

• At Ysgol y Castell, we will work to encourage the following behaviour:

.2 Respect for the environment of the school.

.4 The ability to listen to others.

.5 The ability to follow instructions.

.6 Courtesy and politeness.

.7 Consideration for others.

.8 Honesty.

.9 Responsibility for one's own actions.

.10 Giving of one's best to ensure maximum use of talents.

• We will actively seek to discourage the following:

.2 Verbally hurting or abusing other members of the school community.

.3 The use of bad language.

.4 Impoliteness and bad manners.

.5 Dishonesty.

.6 Taking the property of others without their permission.

Pupils' behaviour at home often differs markedly from their behaviour at school, in some instances being better, in others, worse. Teachers and parents / carers should both bear this in mind when discussing pupils.

• We have established the following rules of behaviour at Ysgol y Castell:

.2 Pupils will walk in an orderly manner in classrooms and along corridors.

.3 Members of the school community will speak to one another in a courteous manner.

.4 Members of the community will not physically abuse other members of the community.

.5 Members of the community will not verbally abuse other members of the community.

.6 Pupils will follow the requests and instructions of members of staff.

.7 Members of the school community will show respect for the environment of the school.

.8 Members of the school community will show respect for the property of others.

• In the classroom, we expect the following :

.2 Please respect others:

- keep hands, feet and objects to yourself;

- no teasing or name calling;

- no touching other people's property without permission.

.3 Please work quietly.

.4 Please put up your hand to answer / or ask a question. Don't shout out.

.5 Please walk in the classroom.

.6 Please only leave your seat with permission or if you urgently need something.

• Rewards and sanctions are part of society and this is reflected in school.
• Both effort and achievement are given praise and recognition. Children may also be rewarded with various stickers, house points and certificates for appropriate work / behaviour.
• In the event of inappropriate behaviour, a programme of sanctions will be used. These sanctions range from verbal reminders of rules to inviting parents / carers to school to discuss problems. The range of sanctions is known to children and teachers and we would be happy to discuss the matter further with you.
• Section 550A of the Education Act 1996 deals with physical intervention by a member of staff. School policy on this matter can be discussed with the Head teacher.

Charging and Remissions.

The Governors' policy on charging and remissions states that 'Payments from parents will be requested in the event of wilful damage or loss to school property or equipment as a result of pupils' behaviour'.

The Parent Teacher Association:

We at Ysgol y Castell are most appreciative of the support offered by our P.T.A.

All parents / carers are automatically members of the P.T.A.

We hope that you will become an active member of the Association.

It will prove rewarding both to you and to the school.

On average the P.T.A. makes more than £4 000 available each year for the education of our pupils.

Children are encouraged to be part of their own and the wider community.

This is achieved in a number of ways:

• Sharing Christmas celebrations with the wider community.
• Supporting the work of children's charities - e.g. 'Save the Children Fund'.
• Supporting one other charity through an annual appeal linked to our Harvest Service.
• The Governing Body is very proud of the work of Mr. Furneaux, Miss Williams in establishing and developing our website www.sirddinbych.gov.uk / www.denbighshire.gov.uk. which allows the wider community to be made aware of the work of the school.

The 'House' System:

• A 'House' system operates at Key Stage 2 (classes 3, 4, 5 and 6). The aims are to foster healthy competition, pride and respect in educational, cultural and physical activities.
• The houses are: Clwyd, Dee and Elwy. Pupils elect their own House Captains and Vice-Captains. We consider election as Captain or Vice-Captain to be great honours.
• Inter House competitions take place in rugby, netball, football, rounders, cricket, swimming, and athletics.
• Pupils can gain 'house points' for educational effort, and the Pritchard - Howarth Trophy is awarded to the most successful house on an annual basis.

Opportunities for Sport at Ysgol y Castell.

• We are proud of the sporting opportunities which we have afforded our pupils during recent years.
• All children are encouraged to develop the basic skills needed for the enjoyment of sport as part of the curriculum in physical education. This includes ball games (netball, rugby, football, rounders, cricket), athletics, gymnastics and swimming).
• Participation in team games including rugby, football, netball, cricket and rounders is encouraged as an extra curricular activity.
• We provide opportunities for children to compete on an inter house team basis in netball, rounders, football, rugby, cricket, swimming and athletics.
• Teams representing Ysgol y Castell compete in football, rugby, netball, rounders, cricket and swimming competitions which may be organised in the locality.
• We aim to maintain the programme of opportunity outlined above and to develop any available links with local rugby, football and cricket clubs in order that children have opportunities to further develop their talents. We will participate in any scheme organised by Denbighshire's Sporting Development Officers which offers opportunity for our pupils to gain further experience of sport.

Educational Visits.

• On occasions the school plans visits to various places and these visits form an important part of class project work.
• Such visits can only take place through voluntary contributions by parents / carers. The school calculates the cost of such visits and notifies parents / carers accordingly.
• All pupils participate in planned visits and if any parent does not wish to or is unable to make a contribution they can approach the Head teacher in order to discuss the matter. Any such discussions will be in confidence. If all parents offer support, we then organise the visit.
• The school reserves the right to cancel any visit should it prove uneconomic. Any monies deposited will be refunded.

Concerns.

If you have any concern regarding your child please feel free to discuss the matter with the class teacher concerned. If concerns are not resolved to your satisfaction, please consult the following:

1. The Head teacher, Ysgol y Castell, Rhuddlan.
