Can I study abroad?
Many Aberdeen students do part of their degree study in another country. Some degree programmes have a built-in period of study abroad. Modern Languages and European Studies degrees obviously demand that you spend time in the country or countries whose languages you are studying, but many other degree programmes offer similar opportunities as an option. For example, Law with Languages or with another European Legal System, offer such opportunities for those who wish to take them. Beyond this, we have two major schemes to help students of most disciplines who wish to spend part of their time studying abroad.
Non-graduating or visiting international students
We welcome visiting students from the United States of America, Canada, the European Union and indeed, all over the world. You can come to study in Aberdeen for an academic year, a semester, or the period September-December. A wide range of courses are available, with the exception of clinical medicine. Application forms are available from the International section of the Student Recruitment and Admissions Service.
International Exchange Programme
Our exchange partners include some of the most distinguished State Universities and private colleges in North America. We now also have exchanges to Hong Kong and Japan. Students normally go on an exchange programme in their second year of study. The year they spend abroad is an integral part of their Aberdeen degree and not an additional year. Credits gained are recognised by the University of Aberdeen and incorporated into the student’s University of Aberdeen academic record. Click here for further information on the International Exchange Programme.
The Socrates Scheme
SOCRATES is a European Union funded programme which aims to increase the exchange of students and staff in all areas and levels of education. One section, ERASMUS, is dedicated to encouraging exchange of students and staff in Higher Education. If you are a citizen of the EU or European Economic Area you can benefit from the programme by studying in a university in another European country for a period. SOCRATES/ERASMUS is particularly directed towards students taking degree programmes other than modern languages. Study placements can be between three and twelve months, and form an integral part of your degree programme. The University has SOCRATES links with about 180 universities in Europe. Further information is available by contacting the SOCRATES Unit within the Registry, or by visiting their web pages at: www.abdn.ac.uk/socrates
