Founded in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the 'Ancient Free School of Dronfield' has evolved over the last 500 years, to become a forward thinking and dynamic comprehensive school firmly rooted in the heart of the Dronfield community. |

Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School is a large 11-18 mixed Specialist Technology College. The school has extensive facilities with a sports hall, full-size, floodlit astroturf, dining facilities and the full range of classrooms, laboratories, workshops and assembly halls. The school has a range of beautiful new buildings with state of the art science, technology and art facilities, a drama studio, hall with sophisticated sound and satellite TV broadcasting facilities and bright and cheerful fast-food diner. |

With around 1980 students on roll and over 250 teaching and support staff, Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School is one of the largest schools in the area and can offer as a result a wide and varied curriculum at all levels. Key Stage 3 pupils have a range of technology courses, drama, a variety of sports and a choice of modern foreign languages to enhance their curriculum. At Key Stage 4 we offer a wide range of GCSE options, ICT and Vocational courses. Virtually all our students will take at least 9 and often 10 GCSE examinations. |

We are particularly proud of the very wide range of Post-16 courses we offer. With over 300 students in our Post-16 section we are small enough to support every student as an individual, yet large enough to offer a comprehensive range of A-Levels and AVCE courses. At Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School we have set ourselves an aim of achieving "Success with Care". Our recent OFSTED report (September 2003) recognised that our levels of achievement at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A-Level were all high and referred to the school as a "happy, high achieving community". We were complimented on our academic success, the high standards of behaviour, the good relationships which exist in the school and the very high quality of teaching. |

As well as academic success, we like to celebrate the many achievements of our students in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Our teams have virtually swept the board this year in football competitions and we have great success in basketball, netball, hockey and golf. Our Young Engineers Club has won national honours as the 1997 Club of the Year and we have the local Maths Quiz champions at our school. We have rich and varied music and drama groups and every year we stage a major show, which usually proves to be a sell out straight away. |

Our Aims
Our central purpose is to ensure that all children at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School achieve the highest standards of which they are capable. These standards will apply to all that children do, whether in the classroom, on the sports field, in concert or on stage, or in the extensive range of other opportunities we offer to pupils at all stages of their education. |

Central to that purpose is an ordered, tolerant and caring community which recognises the diverse talents and abilities of each individual. Thus we aim to provide a secure and disciplined environment where staff and pupils can work together in pursuit of the common goal. |

The curriculum policy of Dronfield School reflects the LEA's curriculum statement 'A Derbyshire Approach to the Curriculum'. It also reflects the Education Reform Act legislation and in particular the provisions of the National Curriculum. |

Main Principles
All pupils, regardless of their gender, colour, creed, ability, background or disadvantage, should be exposed to a curriculum which is broad, balanced, relevant, differentiated and coherent and which displays continuity and progression. |
|
The object of such exposure is to enable all pupils to achieve their full potential by developing into autonomous individuals able to make value judgments about their lives as individuals and as members of communities. The school will be an ordered and orderly community geared to provide the support essential for pupils to succeed. Every pupil will be expected to experience success. |

Curriculum Content
The curriculum is delivered through the following curriculum area structure: English, Maths, Science, Technology, Humanities, Modern Languages, Creative and Expressive Arts, Personal and Social Education and Vocational Education. |

There are a number of explicitly cross-curricular areas such as Special Educational Needs and those associated with the National Curriculum, such as Technology, Information Technology, Citizenship, Environmental Education, Economic and Industrial Understanding, Health Education and Careers Education and Guidance. The school also expects equal opportunities to inform all parts of the curriculum. |

The curriculum in years 7-9, years 10 and 11 and years 12 and 13 is as follows:-
Years 7-9 (Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum)
All pupils are required to follow the National Curriculum plus R.E. and P.S.E. Following the major revision of the National Curriculum undertaken by Sir Ron Dearing, programmes of study have been substantially revised and made more manageable. At Key Stage 3 all pupils must study Mathematics, Science, English, Technology, History, Geography, PE, Art, Music, a modern foreign language as well as RE and PSE. |

Years 10-11 (Key Stage 4 of the National Curriculum)
The curriculum is made up of CORE subjects and OPTIONS There is no choice over the core subjects. Out of the twenty five periods a week, twelve periods are made up of core subjects.
It is now a requirement of the National Curriculum that all pupils follow a course in English, Maths, Science, Technology, IT, Modern Foreign Language, RE and PE. The governors have always supported the principle of breadth and balance in the curriculum and feel that the inclusion of a creative arts subject and one of the humanities subjects is the best way to achieve that end. |

Post-16 Education
Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School offers a wide range of 'A' level, 'AS' level, GCSE and GNVQ courses in one of the largest school sixth forms in the region. Much work has been done by school staff to ensure that students in the area are aware of what we have to offer. Around 350 students are enrolled at present on Post-16 courses. | |
