Children in the Junior School follow work set by the National Curriculum at Key Stage 2.
General Curriculum Aims
We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for our children. The School Curriculum is organised in agreement with the requirements of the National Curriculum.
The core subjects are... English, Mathematics and Science.
Foundation subjects are... History, Geography, Technology, Music, Art, P.E., R.E. and P.S.E.
Foundation Subjects
We are concerned that our children experience as wide a learning process as possible. This includes social and personal education, environmental education and ecological education as well as the full range of individual foundation subjects that are presently part of the National Curriculum.
The school timetable is divided into subject areas following the structure of the N.C. so that the children can experience an in-depth approach to the various disciplines. However, we consider it important to stress cross curricular links where possible and some work takes place through mini themes linking areas together.
The Learning Environment
Within each ability grouped class, children will work in smaller ability groups for much of Mathematics, Science, English, Technology, History and Geography. Some aspects of Games are also graded. The emphasis that the N.C. places upon individual attainment cannot effectively be met by mixed ability groups all the time.
We do believe strongly that it is important for children to work effectively and caringly with all their peers in the class. A lot of activities we present are designed to promote that harmonious environment.
We feel that it is very important to stress the multi-ethnic and anti-sexist demands of our society. Our curriculum seeks not only to present opportunities to debate these issues but also to provide a fundamental learning environment that is unbiased and reflects a wider society than Newhall. |
