WELCOME!!!

Norbury is a small, rural church school in a village location, situated 5 miles from the market town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire and 8 miles from Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. The school is for children aged between 5 and 11 years old. It has a pupil roll of 50. The school is characterized by its warmth and friendliness.

The school is housed in a Victorian school building, which is in good condition, both internally and externally, and is conscientiously maintained. There is a designated classroom for the teaching of the Reception children. The school has full use of the Village Hall, which is on site. The Hall has its own kitchen and the excellent school lunches are cooked here and eaten in the dining room of the Village Hall. There is a playground with an adjoining sports field and nature garden.

The Governors work closely with all the staff and parents to ensure that the educational opportunities of all the children are protected and enhanced, so that the children leaving Norbury can be confident and prosper in all that they do. The Governing body makes a full and worthwhile contribution to the school and is fully supportive of the Headteacher and staff.

At Norbury we provide a broad and well-balanced curriculum, where the quality and range of learning opportunities are of the highest standard. Our school is an effective climate for learning and attainment in English and Maths at the end of both Key Stages is above National standards. The teaching staff are fully committed to driving up standards and maintaining pupils’ progress. The staff – pupil ratio is good throughout the school, and in the Junior Department teaching groups are rarely more than 15 pupils for English, Maths and Science.

We set targets for attainment in English, Maths and Science which show a challenge for improvement and these are met and exceeded in National tests. Pupils with special educational needs are included in all aspects of the curriculum and their particular needs catered for in the most appropriate and tactful way. Positive comments, praise and rewards are used to raise levels of self-esteem and encourage a belief in themselves as learners.

Our pupils are happy, well motivated, self-disciplined and enthusiastic in their approach to work, applying themselves conscientiously to all tasks. Above all, we encourage a positive mental attitude. Our pupils are taught to believe in themselves and have confidence in their own abilities.

ETHOS

Relationships within the school
Relationships within the school are very good. Staff work closely together and have a genuine care and concern for each other and the pupils. Pupils are friendly and polite to adults and to other pupils.
Behaviour/discipline
High standards of behaviour are expected; rules are simple, encouraging courtesy and consideration. Pupils are attentive in class, settling down to work quickly and quietly. On the playground, they show thoughtfulness for others in their play.
Parish/community links
Links with the parish and the wider community are strong. The Chair of Governors and the Vicar are regular visitors; distance from the church makes it difficult for the school to visit the church regularly, but acts of Collective Worship on special occasions are held in the Village Hall and parents are invited. The Governing body is very active and supportive, as are the Friends of Norbury School. Parents are made welcome and their comments about the school are very positive. Pupils have contact with both the Play Group and the Senior Citizens. At Ascensiontide, the school is active in the village well-dressing.
Buildings and the school environment
The buildings are in good repair, but, as in many old schools, space is limited. There are plans for further alterations to the building, which will help to create more space. The school is kept very clean and the pupils are encouraged to be tidy. Displays are bright and enhance the pupils' learning. Outside, playground facilities are good.
Special needs/equal opportunities/racism/bullying policies
It is obvious that these issues are taken seriously. Attention is paid to the academic and social needs of each pupil. A strong sense of 'family' discourages bullying.
Opportunities for spiritual, moral, social, cultural development
Collective Worship and RE make important contributions to pupils' spiritual and moral development. The policy document recognizes that this development can be encouraged throughout the whole curriculum. Grace is said in the classrooms before dinner, as is a prayer at the end of the day. Pupils are keen to help others. The social development of pupils is encouraged through their contact with the very young and the elderly, as well as through the school's residential trips. The possibility of forging links with a school in North India is still being explored. This would further enhance the pupils' cultural development.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

We aim to enrich the basic curriculum with visits, visitors and links with the wider community. It is our intention to enhance the pupils’ learning with appropriate termly visits to places of educational interest and value. The Year 5 & 6 pupils annually attend an outdoor education centre for a residential visit.

(See News page for details of this term’s activities.)

Links with Other Schools
As a small school it is necessary to ensure that our pupils mix with children from other schools.

As a staff we work closely with other similar schools for mutual support and development.

Norbury is a member of the Dove Valley Small Schools Association, of which there are 22 member schools. The aim of this association is to provide opportunities for sporting and other competitive activities.
