Norbury is a small, rural church school in a village location, situated 5 miles from the market town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire and 8 miles from Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. The school is for children aged between 5 and 11 years old. It has a pupil roll of 50. The school is characterized by its warmth and friendliness.
The school is housed in a Victorian school building, which is in good condition, both internally and externally, and is conscientiously maintained. There is a designated classroom for the teaching of the Reception children. The school has full use of the Village Hall, which is on site. The Hall has its own kitchen and the excellent school lunches are cooked here and eaten in the dining room of the Village Hall. There is a playground with an adjoining sports field and nature garden.
The Governors work closely with all the staff and parents to ensure that the educational opportunities of all the children are protected and enhanced, so that the children leaving Norbury can be confident and prosper in all that they do. The Governing body makes a full and worthwhile contribution to the school and is fully supportive of the Headteacher and staff.
At Norbury we provide a broad and well-balanced curriculum, where the quality and range of learning opportunities are of the highest standard. Our school is an effective climate for learning and attainment in English and Maths at the end of both Key Stages is above National standards. The teaching staff are fully committed to driving up standards and maintaining pupils’ progress. The staff – pupil ratio is good throughout the school, and in the Junior Department teaching groups are rarely more than 15 pupils for English, Maths and Science.
We set targets for attainment in English, Maths and Science which show a challenge for improvement and these are met and exceeded in National tests. Pupils with special educational needs are included in all aspects of the curriculum and their particular needs catered for in the most appropriate and tactful way. Positive comments, praise and rewards are used to raise levels of self-esteem and encourage a belief in themselves as learners.
Our pupils are happy, well motivated, self-disciplined and enthusiastic in their approach to work, applying themselves conscientiously to all tasks. Above all, we encourage a positive mental attitude. Our pupils are taught to believe in themselves and have confidence in their own abilities.
