Welcome to Portway Junior School!

Portway Juniors is a happy, caring and forward looking school. We believe that for children to achieve their potential there has to be a safe and welcoming atmosphere in school, where every child is valued.

The partnership between parents and school is also very important to us and the web site is one way in which we can strengthen that link. You will be able to find recent newsletters, holiday dates, information about each Year Group’s learning, and copies of letters sent home at the touch of a button. Naturally we will continue to use conventional methods of communication too but we hope that the web site will be a useful addition to these.

Portway Junior School was established in 1947. An oak tree was planted in the extensive playing fields when the school was founded and this is the emblem seen on our school badge.

The original school buildings were demolished in the summer of 1995 and the new building opened in 1996. Since 2000 three new classrooms have been added to cope with the demand for places at this popular school and enabling an I.T. Suite to be created.

We are proud to be a forward looking school and one that aims high in all areas. We have recently been recognised as Investors in People and have achieved the Basic Skills Mark 2, Artsmark award and the Health Promoting Schools award.

Year 6

Our aim is to raise funds for those extra things the children need to make their time at Portway Junior enjoyable and rewarding. During the last year we have organised discos, Christmas parties and chocolate bingo for the children, an adult quiz night, competitions and our main event, the Summer Evening Extravaganza.

We meet once or twice a term and very much work as a team; we always welcome new members and fresh ideas. Please contact Clare Baggaley or Melanie Woodcock through the school office if you could spare any time, no matter how little, to be involved.

Thanks to the excellent support of the parents and staff we have been able to raise enough money to buy CD players and a new piano during the last year and are working towards buying interactive white boards for the classrooms. We provided a small gift for each child last Christmas and this year will be treating each class to much-needed new games for wet break times.
