Situated in the heart of England, there has been a spiritual community at Repton for over 800 years and the inspiring buildings of the 12th Century Priory remain at the centre of the School complex.
2007 marks the 450th anniversary of the School's foundation, to be celebrated in a full programme of events. Over its 450 years Repton has established a strong tradition of distinguished alumni in public life, sport and the arts, including Roald Dahl, C B Fry, Graeme Garden and Jeremy Clarkson.
The 21st Century Repton is a fully co-educational school with a strong boarding ethos and is home to 600 pupils. Individuality flourishes within the context of a real community, and every Reptonian is encouraged to discover those areas in which he or she can excel and to prepare for the world of possibilities that lie beyond the Arch.
We recognise that in deciding to send your son or daughter to Repton you are making a tremendous investment both financially and - more importantly - in entrusting us with your child for five crucial years of his or her development. We know that this decision will be based on careful research and discussions within the family and with the existing school. Our responsibility is to make that process as straightforward as possible by providing you with all the opportunities you need to talk to our staff and pupils and to see the School at work, so that you can feel fully confident that you have made the right choice.
For many prospective parents their first contact with Repton is via this website, which we hope provides useful information about the School and through its images and news items a real sense of the spirit and vibrancy of our community. But the best way to get a true flavour of Repton’s atmosphere is to visit the School in person. We are delighted to welcome families at any point – to tour our beautiful site, see the School’s facilities at first-hand, and above all to meet our staff and pupils.

Academic work is at the heart of what we do at Repton. Our aim is to allow each pupil to develop his or her potential to the maximum. This means setting the highest expectations for each Reptonian and then developing the systems to monitor and support each pupil’s individual progress. We believe that this allows pupils to achieve more than they could have imagined.
In the first year at Repton, boys and girls study English, Mathematics, the three Sciences, French, either Latin or Classical Civilisation, History, Geography, Religious Studies, ICT and PE. The majority of students also study German or Spanish. Art, Design and Technology and Music are also taught.
At GCSE there is a core of compulsory subjects: English Language (and Literature for most pupils), Mathematics, French and either three separate Sciences or Dual Award Science according to ability. Pupils also choose three optional subjects.
In the Sixth Form, most pupils take four AS level subjects and three of these subjects at A-level, although some may take more. In addition to these formal A-level subjects, in the Lower Sixth pupils take a course in Civics, designed by the School, to educate pupils in global and personal finance, the emerging markets, the law and scientific issues. There is a programme of lectures for the Upper Sixth.
In 2007, 58% of our entries at A-level were awarded A grades and 86.2% of our entries were graded A/B. At GCSE 29.1% of our entries were graded A* and 64.4% of our entries were graded A*/A. On average, twelve students each year are awarded places at either Oxford or Cambridge Universities.
We believe that it is the duty of a good school to guide its pupils to the discovery of the lifelong interests and opportunities for self-expression that are vital to the development of every human being. Each individual has at least one area in which they can excel and once that discovery is made, self-belief flourishes in every aspect of their lives.
Repton is fortunate to posses superb facilities: in sport, all-weather hockey pitches, an indoor swimming pool, and a cricket ground that is the envy of many schools and clubs; a Music School with a plethora of practice rooms and performance areas; a versatile, purpose-built Studio Theatre; a stunning Art School with dedicated spaces for three-dimensional work, ceramics and photography as well as more traditional media – and this is just a taste of what is on offer.
But the most important resource is our staff, whose expertise, energy and, above all, passion for their subject will inspire pupils and who will commit themselves just as wholeheartedly to the beginner and the enthusiast as they will to the Grade 8 musician, the national sports player or the IT Scholar.
These activities will do more than merely provide meaningful occupation. Through CCF, Duke of Edinburgh and Community Service programmes, as well as charity work throughout the year, pupils are encouraged to look beyond the Arch and to consider what they can contribute to the wider community. In this way we hope that pupils will recognise that we all have a responsibility to look after the most vulnerable and discover that true self-knowledge and personal fulfillment comes with the accepting of that responsibility. The Chapel underpins this sense of community and its Christian values are central to the life of the School.

The house is in a true sense every Reptonian’s home in the School – the place where pupils eat, sleep, work and live; where their most enduring relationships with peers and members of staff are born; and a secure, stable base within the busy life of a boarding school.
It is also home to the Housemaster or Housemistress and their family, and under their expert care pupils are encouraged to develop academically, socially and in all aspects of their extracurricular life. Each House also has its own resident Matron, on hand 24 hours a day to care for the pupils’ welfare and practical needs, with the support of the School’s Medical Centre. The team is further strengthened by a team of tutors, who take an active interest in all that the pupils undertake, individually or as a community.
This cohesive, family environment is fostered by the traditional system of in-house dining, which means that the House community meets together three times a day, providing a chance to chat about the events of the day, relax with their friends and for staff to keep abreast of any concerns a pupil might have. Each House has its own dining room and its own chef, who can therefore deal with specific dietary requests and keep the whole house well-fed and happy!
There are ten Houses – six for boys and four for girls, each housing approximately 60 pupils, and day pupils are fully integrated with the boarders in all of the houses. Some possess beautiful, Victorian architectural features, others are much more modern in design, but a rolling programme of investment ensures that boarding facilities are constantly being improved and updated. Accommodation varies slightly but in all houses Reptonians progress from the fun of a shared room for the younger pupils to enjoying greater privacy as seniors, and all have access to a choice of Common Rooms, with comfortable sofas and entertainment systems, and the School network in their studies and bedsits.
The essence of House life, though, is its inclusive nature: all pupils, from B Blockers to Upper Sixth, boarders and day pupils alike, and, of course, staff too, are thoroughly involved in the community, be that sports competitions, House plays or fundraising events, and they thrive on the chance to make a contribution. Reptonians develop in an environment that is stimulating, sociable but structured, and they respond enthusiastically to this opportunity. The one thing that one can be sure of hearing is that every Reptonian staunchly believes that his or her House is the very best in the School!
