Welcome to Bishops Tawton Primary School

Bishops Tawton is a small Devon village two miles from the busy market town of Barnstaple with its leisure centre, theatre and modern shopping facilities.  North Devon is an area of great natural beauty offering both coast and moorland.

The school is situated in the middle of the village with views across the river valley.  It is part of a friendly community and aspires to a tradition of excellence.

The accommodation comprises the original building that dates back to 1860, two separate classrooms, a dining room and a large hall space.  There are plenty of safe play areas.  The school is organised in 5 classes covering the primary age range from reception to year 6.

Our staff works closely together.  There are seven teachers, three learning support assistants, a canteen manager and assistant, a school administrative officer, five lunchtime assistants and a caretaker.

We follow the National Curriculum and have been praised for the quality of our teaching and the caring environment.  Children follow programmes of study in the following subjects; Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, Technology, Art, Science, RE, PE, Music, History and Geography.

AIMS:

Bishops Tawton Primary School aims to:

·     Create a caring environment so that children are happy to come to school and enjoy a friendly atmosphere.

·     Recognise the need of every individual by encouraging self-confidence, self-esteem, self-motivation, self-control and independence.

·     Operate a sound and consistent approach to discipline.  We encourage respect for others and their property, a commitment to good manners, team spirit and an acceptable level of behaviour at all times.

·     Acknowledge those who show consideration for others and withdraw privileges from those who behave in an antisocial manner.

·     Actively encourage continuing home school liaison by involving the families of the children in many ways and as often as possible.

·     Recognise the importance of Christian worship and Religious Education in the development of the whole child and we seek to encourage a sensitive understanding of, and a respect for, other religious beliefs.

ADMISSIONS

The admissions process for schools will change for the academic year 2006/2007.

First Steps booklets will be distributed to early Years providers, primary schools, libraries and health centres.  Included in this booklet will be a Common Application Form.  This form will be used for the purpose of admitting pupils into the first year of primary education.  Parents will be invited to express two preferences, in rank order, returning the form to the Admissions Team at County Hall, Exeter or applying online at www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline.

Children whose fifth birthday falls between the 1st September and the end of February are admitted at the start of the Autumn term and children whose fifth birthday falls between the 1st March and 31st August are admitted at the start of the Spring Term.  The reception class teacher aims to visit each child at home and they are invited to visit school on two afternoons.  They start school for mornings only in the first instance and become full time shortly afterwards, as they are ready.

We have close links with the village playgroup.
