The original building, which houses the Junior classroom, the Middle classroom, two offices, Resources Area, Library and two cloakroom areas, was built in the Victorian times. The 'temporary' building, which houses the Early Years classroom was erected during the early 1960's. The Victorian building has been substantially modernised with new double-glazing and carpeting. A few years ago we had a new resource area built which enclosed the toilets so that they are no longer outside. A library was created and there is one entrance for visitors which has enhanced the security of the school. Gas central heating has replaced the night storage heating which was inadequate. We are fortunate to have wonderful grounds which house a football pitch, an adventure play area, built by the P.T.A. and a picnic area. Pond and wildlife gardens are on-going projects. A new school hall is nearing completion and will provide a multi-purpose hall (for sports, drama, assemblies, etc), staff room, toilets, community room and storage.

CLAWTON PRIMAY SHOULD BE A SCHOOL:

  • where children feel part of the family ethos.
  • where children are able to grow and develop with confidence and self-esteem.
  • where children feel valued as individuals and as members of social and cultural groups.
  • where children exhibit self-discipline and self-awareness based on trusting relationships.
  • where children can develop the confidence to work in a class, group or individual setting.
  • which provides a stimulating learning environment with opportunities for differentiated experimental learning which encourages all children to reach their true potential.
  • where children are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves, others and the environment both in and out of school.
  • where parents are encouraged to share in educational activities.
  • where Governors, parents, members of the local community, external agencies and visitors are made welcome.
  • where Governors and staff co-operate successfully for the ultimate benefit of the children, their families and the community.
  • where a common value system is shared by all enabling consistency in learning, standards and behaviour.
  • where all children are aware of their strengths; acknowledge their weaknesses and have strategies with which to cope with these in the future.

CURRICULUM

Your child will attend primary school for seven years. The years are as follows:

Foundation Stage
4+ Part time Key Stage 2 8+ Year3
5+ Reception
9+ Year 4

Key Stage 1
6+ Year 1
10+ Year 5
7+ Year 2
11+ Year 6

Like all state schools we follow the National Curriculum and it provides the structure for all we do. It is made up of three ‘core’ subjects, ‘Foundation’ subjects and Religious Education, all of which contain prescribed programmes of study and attainment targets. Children in the primary school study ‘Key Stage 1’ which is assessed at age 7 (May of year 2) and ‘Key Stage 2’, which is assessed at age 11 (May of year 6). Our youngest children follow the Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals to ensure that they develop their skills which include physical, social and emotional development, as well as presenting them with opportunities to develop essential numeracy and literacy skills. Full details of the National Curriculum structure are available from the Headteacher. The National Curriculum lays down in law “What” has to be learned by each child. The following summarises our organisation of “How” our children will attempt to learn it. At Clawton we employ the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies to deliver English and Mathematics.
