Welcome to our school!!!

At Great Torrington Junior School we are dedicated to promoting learning for all of our members - adults and children alike. We have a friendly and caring learning environment. We are fortunate in having an enthusiastic, experienced and committed staff of teachers, support assistants and adminstration staff and the backing of a very supportive governing body and local authority.

We offer more than just the National Curriculum. Each child spends a half a day a week at Forest School learning woodland skills that include the use of tools, wood cutting, charcoal making, fire lighting and shelter building. The Great Torrington Curriculum Agreement ensures all children experience a range of regular visits out of school, visitors into their classrooms, professional drama groups and opportunities to make oral presentations. They use puppets, take part in debates and draw regularly. The school day normally begins with a whole school keep fit session.

There is a good range of out of school activities that include a choir and sports, drama and skipping clubs. The range of clubs has been recently expanded to include First Aid and rugby. In addition the Torrington Family Project provide the Scrambles Breakfast Club, Tarka After School Club and holiday clubs.

Our children are given a wide range of opportunities to take on real responsibilities. The School Council is very active. Each class elects two representatives and the council meets monthly. They are an essential part of our management team, for example, they regularly help to interview teachers when we are making new appointments. The team of Junior Rangers help to set up the Forest School areas and activities each day as well as helping to maintain the site. Children operate the school shop and the Healthy Snack service which are maintained wholly on their own profits. They work as Peer Counsellors resolving playground conflicts, librarians and Peer mentors for younger children. The school office is supprted by 4 Junior Office Assistants. Through these responsibilities they make a valuable contribution to school life.
