| WELCOME!!!
For over three hundred years, Hele's School has been associated with one of the best traditions of educational excellence - encouraging personal achievement. Our aim is to support young people into meaningful and satisfying adult lives, and this means taking care to give every one of our pupils the chance to succeed in whatever fields their strengths lie.
Hele's offers opportunities for pupils to develop their potential not only in traditional academic ways - and Hele's pupils consistently perform within the top 10 per cent nationally in public exams - but by discovering their ability in creative, technological, recreational and vocational areas, too. Pupils are also encouraged to take initiative and show leadership.
Hele's currently has local, regional and national champions regularly representing the district or county in a variety of team games. A group from Hele's recently designed, made and tested specialist tools now in use with a large engineering company. Hele's musicians regularly win places in youth bands and orchestras as well as prizes in music competitions. All of which is just one aspect of achievement and a small sample of our pupils' success.
Hele's has helped prepare many people who have gone on to make an important impact on British life, like artist Sir Joshua Reynolds and Sir Charles Eastlake, first director of the National Gallery. We want all Hele's pupils to feel valued, to have confidence and pride in their abilities and to feel that they have a positive and worthwhile contribution to make to the world in which they live as we move into the 21st century.
Hele's is a 1,360 pupil co-educational comprehensive school providing fully for the needs of pupils aged 11 to 18. We are maintained by the Local Education Authority.

| Hele's School is a government designated Language College. This means that, in addition to all other academic subjects, we provide additional specialist teaching in froreign languages.
All students follow two languages up to the age of 16 as well as studying a module of Spanish in the sixth form.
The main languages are French and German but Mandarin Chinese is also available for the very able linguists.
The school is equipped with modern high quality equipment that supports language learning. This includes a language laboratory, a computer room in the languages department, vido conferencing and satellite television.

| Admission of new pupils to Hele’s is currently organised by Plymouth LEA, and the criteria the LEA uses to allocate secondary school places are explained in its booklet The Next Step, which is available from the Plymouth Education Office.
In 2006, Hele’s planned to admit 210 new pupils into Year 7. For the guidance of potential new pupils and their families, the number of applications reached 224.
Numbers of current year 6 pupils is low across the city, and like other schools, it is possible that we may not fill up from our feeder primaries for the first time in may years. This may influence the number of category 6 pupils gaining places.

| Hele’s is an 11-18 school and Post 16 plays a significant part in the life and work of the school. We are justifiably proud of the large number of students who choose to continue their education at Post 16, and, of course, equally proud of their various achievements.
We are delighted each year how many students choose to join us both from our own school and other’s. Hele’s believes strongly that all young people deserve an opportunity to reach their potential and as such we run a wide range of opportunities for all abilities. Parents and students can contact Mr James directly jamesr@heles.plymouth.sch.uk and we encourage you to visit us. We run a number of opportunities for people to find out what is available to them. |
