Welcome to Langtree Community School & Nursery Unit

Langtree School was built in 1929 opposite the Parish Church and next to the Post Office as a centre for local community life. We are very lucky. Our school is set in rural North Devon, some four miles from Torrington. We are fortunate to have enclosed grounds which include:

  • A large grass play area
  • Tarmac Netball court
  • Our own Vegetable Garden
  • Summer outdoor Swimming Pool
  • Access to the new Community Hall
  • A computer room with networked PCs and Apple Macintosh computers
  • A large selection of books, aimed at all age ranges
…and many other facilities that help make learning fun!

AIMS

  • Provide every child with a happy, safe and supportive environment which promotes self-esteem.
  • Provide a broad and balanced curriculum with equal opportunities, which enables and inspires every child to fulfil their individual potential.
  • Provide opportunities for all children to develop social skills, good manners, consideration and respect for others and their beliefs.
  • Fully develop the creative, aesthetic and spiritual side of each child’s nature. Encourage an appreciation for environment and community, both locally and global.

CORE SUBJECTS

We believe in the importance of a firm grasp of the basic skills in English and Maths at an early age.

The school has integrated the Literacy Hour into the teaching of English. We aim to hear each child read once a week. Every child is given a book bag when they start school. (Replacement bags may be purchased for £2.75) In this will be a book from our reading scheme to read at home and a reading diary for teachers and parents to record in. In addition, many children bring home a different class library book of their choice.

We have a well thought-out Maths syllabus, which has been adapted to incorporate the National Numeracy Strategy.

We have also devoted a lot of time to ensuring that our Science curriculum fully meets statutory requirements.

CURRICULUM ORGANISATION

In line with the Foundation Curriculum and the National Curriculum, our intention is to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for all children, regardless of race, religion, culture or ability. In the Nursery and Reception classes, teaching is guided by the Early learning Goals of the Foundation Curriculum. In years 1 to 6, English, Maths and Science form the core subjects. We will ensure that your child studies these to the appropriate level alongside the foundation subjects, which are ICT, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Music and PE. We also teach Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and a modern foreign language, German. The class teacher or teachers teach most subjects, although specialist teaching also takes place in Music and German. Sometimes children will be taught as a class, sometimes as a small group and sometimes individually.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

The school offers a range of extra curricular activities during the year. Particularly popular are our football and netball clubs. In the summer, swimming in our outdoor pool is another favourite. The older children are taken on a residential visit each year. This allows them to experience a wide range of adventurous activities in a safe environment.

All classes take part in educational visits throughout the year, related to their class work. Children help to look after the garden and often hold an open day in the summer, with tours, cream teas and plants for sale.
