Meavy Church of England Primary School is a school located in the picturesque area of Dartmoor, Devon.

We have little over 100 children on roll, split into four classes based upon age. At present the classes are organised as follows.

  • Class PPL - Years F/1
  • Class KW - Years 2/3
  • Class HL/RA - Year 4
  • Class DP - Years 5/6
Meavy enjoys a reputation for excellence in many fields such as: academic achievement, musical success and sporting prowess, but above all, we are known for our caring "family" atmosphere which enables our children to learn to face the world with confidence.

  • To provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum for all our pupils which will develop fully the individual talents and potential of each pupil.
  • To provide, through the best possible standards of academic, physical, spiritual, moral and cultural education within a Christian environment, a firm and lasting foundation for each child in a modern society.
  • To promote a high standard of discipline based on selfdiscipline.
  • To promote supportive and cooperative relationships between home, school and the local community with staff, governors and parents working together to achieve clear targets.

At Meavy we use a mixture of topic based and discrete subject teaching to cover the requirements of the National Curriculum and to extend the children’s understanding, learning and knowledge. Sometimes the children may be taught as a whole class but at other times may work in small groups or individually. We believe that there can be no substitute for first hand experience and therefore frequently use our immediate surroundings, visits, visitors to the school and artefacts in the classroom to enhance the children’s learning. The Governors have adopted the Devon County Council’s Curriculum Statement which, together with all the School’s policies, is available for reading in school.

A range of extracurricular activities are provided by staff and parents on a voluntary basis. These vary from year to year and from term to term but recently have included:

  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Gym
  • Recorder
  • Cross Stitch
  • Playground Games
  • Year 6 Club
  • Netball
  • Games Club
  • Debating
  • Homework
  • Tag Rugby

Our reception teacher, Mrs PriceLewis, offers to visit you at home before your child actually starts school. Parents and children may find this helpful as it gives them the chance to chat informally about individual concerns. When your child starts school we usually begin with half days and extend these when we feel your child is able to benefit from whole days.
