Milton Abbot School - A Community School

Milton Abbot School serves the villages of Milton Abbot and Chillaton. It also receives children from the smaller communities in our rural area. We are a popular school and our roll has risen considerably in recent years. It is our aim to serve the needs of all children in our local area. We have a clear admissions policy that gives priority to local children within our catchment area.

We are proud of our unique school building built in 1829 by the 6th Duke of Bedford, making it one of the first schools in the region. It is a Grade II listed building and retains many interesting architectural features. The schoolhouse has been incorporated into the school to create a spacious and varied learning environment with scope for a wide range of teaching approaches and activities.

AIMS

At Milton Abbot School we aim to provide a caring, stimulating environment where quality teaching and learning take place every day.

We know that parents want the best for their children and that our school must meet the needs of each and every child. We must provide a safe and happy community where everyone, children and adults, can expect respect, encouragement and support.

We aim for continual improvement in our own practice and set high expectations for all. Education is about achieving our true potential. It is a life-long process. The acquisition of basic skills, which are essential for all, is at the core of our curriculum. The children of today must also be prepared for a rapidly changing world where adaptability and creativity will be at a premium.

We have a hardworking and dedicated team at Milton Abbot School. The team of staff, governors and parents work together to promote the continuing development of our school, meeting the needs of all children in our area. We are proud to be a vital part of our local community.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Teachers send home details of what is happening in class at the beginning of each term. We will also be posting on this page details of the curriculum and topic focus for each class every term.

As soon as children enter the school we aim to provide a smooth transition from their ‘foundation stage’ experiences at home and in playgroup or nursery etc. We consider the needs of each child as they arrive so we can plan appropriate activities to start them on their way at school.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

Our Staff regularly offer to give their own time to run after school clubs. Last year a large number of children signed up for Environmental, Football, Netball, Tag Rugby, Art, Cookery and Tennis Clubs. We hope to offer similar range of activities in 2007-07. These clubs are much appreciated by parents and children. All we ask is that children make a commitment to attend every week and that parents collect their children on time at 4.15 p.m.
