Queen Elizabeth's Community College stands at the heart of a thriving learning community that includes thirteen primary schools spread across hundreds of square miles of rolling Devon countryside.
The long traditions of this ancient school combine with a strong ambition to meet the future head on through our status as a specialist College. This gives us additional funding to make learning more interesting and exciting in Science, Maths, Technology and Information and Communications Technology, not only for our students, but also for those in our partner schools. Through this funding and other sources, we have been able to add over 130 new computers since January, 15 of which are laptops for Bryan Smith, our primary ICT expert, to use around our family of primary schools.
As well as this emphasis on the above subjects, we of course offer the full range of subjects and are particularly strong in the Arts and Humanities areas. We are planning an Arts Festival in Crediton next summer and have invested in new computer facilities for Art and Music as well as adding GCSE Dance to our curriculum.
We are also a very inclusive College. We have a very successful Specific Learning Difficulties Centre here which deals with students with dyslexia from all over the county. We pull out all the stops to help all our students, whatever their ability, physical or intellectual. We are particularly proud of the achievements of our students who have had to struggle against the odds.

| - At Queen Elizabeth's we want to create a learning community based in
and around Crediton and its surrounding villages and hamlets.
- This will be a vibrant and forward looking community that values
learning both for its own sake in opening minds and as the key skill in a
knowledge society.
- It will have no upper or lower age limits, but will welcome and do its
best to serve the needs of all learners, irrespective of physical or
intellectual ability, gender, religion or race.
- It will recognise that enjoyment of learning is the key determinant of
success. It will therefore seek to continuously improve the quality and
relevance of the learning experiences on offer and hence the outcomes
achieved by all.
- It will be based in and around the schools that make up the Crediton
Learning Community, but it will also exist virtually as an electronic
community and socially as a binding force for the common good.
- It will gradually move from being a collection of schools to a network of
learners who mutually support one another in building their skills,
knowledge and abilities, unbound by limits of time, age or place.

| QECC was awarded Technology College status in 1998 as one of the earliest
specialist schools in Devon. Specialist schools are now at the centre of
Government plans to reform secondary schools. There are still relatively few
‘High Performing Specialist Schools’ which are able to be training schools and
offer a second specialism. Schools have to meet several targets to become a
HPSS and we are very proud of the fact that we have met these targets for the
past two years since the scheme started.
Our Specialist status has allowed us to develop many things,
but particularly the specialist subjects of Maths, Science,
Technology and ICT. This has meant more equipment, new
courses, more opportunities for students inside and outside
school, special festivals and learning weeks and outreach work
with our primary partners. |
| We have developed our sixth form provision to give a first class service for all students who wish to carry on with their education after the age of sixteen. The Sixth Form Centre, College House, has been developed within the original (1861) Grammar School buildings. The old school hall has been transformed into a modern, state of the art library, with ICT, book and periodical resources. In addition to specialist teaching rooms and study facilities, the Sixth Form Centre has ICT suites, a common room and refreshment area.
Queen Elizabeth’s offers a rich curriculum of academic and vocational courses including:
- AS and A-levels in over 25 subjects, leading, for most students, to university degree courses
- BTEC First Diplomas in Sports and Outdoor Education and in Media/ICT
- The ASDAN Youth Award
In addition to their courses of study, all sixth formers at Queen Elizabeth’s take part in a Diploma-style programme, in which students develop their wider interests and skills through:
- Work experience related to their future study or employment aspirations.
- Extra-curricular activities in the areas of creativity, action and service, such as voluntary work helping adults with learning difficulties, Swahili language and culture and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
- Careers education and guidance, through the support of specialist sixth form tutors and the College’s Connexions Personal Advisors

| There is a long tradition of Boarding at QE; it remains the only state school in
Devon to provide Boarding places for students from 11-19. Originally this was to
allow students from North Devon to access a grammar school, but now we have
students from all over the world.
We are increasingly attracting students from Europe who wish to study in an
English Sixth Form and this considerably strengthens the cultural and languages
dimensions of our sixth form offer.
We also offer an outstanding opportunity to students of all ages who can’t find a
good state school in their home area at a fee rate well below that of private
education. Younger students can benefit greatly from the chance to live and
learn in rural Devon in a relaxed yet purposeful learning environment. |
